When I lived in China, we often heard rumors of the Chinese government listening to telephone conversations and monitoring Internet use. This week we look at more evidence that links the Chinese and other governments to the monitoring of communication from individuals. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.
Which country using monitoring systems surprised you? What types of monitoring should not be allowed? What types of monitoring should be allowed? If you were charged with the responsibility of monitoring Internet communication for the purposes of national security, how would you do it without abusing personal privacy? If you were in China and a friend sent you text messages with words that you knew were on China’s restricted list, what would you do?

I honestly was not surprised about the other countrys monitoring any types of communication. I dont think any monitoring should be used. I wouldn't know what to do. I would report it even if it was a relative or even my own wife.
I makes sense that a slightly corrupt communist country like China would have Skype surveillance system. But thoroughly western countries like Germany and Austria actually finding a "back door" to private communication amazes me. My opinion is that nothing should be monitored on the internet, even stuff like terrorism. After all, the internet is the internet, and any attempts to try and stop that would be ruthless. Of course if monitoring the internet was my job, I would do my best. I would only monitor public information, like stuff posted on websites, but I would not be so invasive as to actually track private information, such as email and Skype. If I wanted to communicate under the watchful eye of the Chinese intelligence, I would only send emails that did not include "politically charged" words.
I think that monitoring peoples internet use is a bit too much. Listening to peoples private phone calls. If some one sent me a message that restricted chinas government i would tell the person who sent it to not use that language.
I don't understand why China is over populated when it has all these harsh rules. China has no right to monitor peoples' actions because they feel like it. If they were warned of a attack or something else like so then I can see why they may do such thing but people are not slaves. China should have a more free lifestyle because it's the people who make the country.
None of the countries that used monitoring systems surprised me. All monitoring should not be allowed. If I were charged with the responsibility of monitoring Internet communication for the purposes of national security, I wouldn’t even spy in the first place so I wouldn’t be left with this dilemma. If a friend sent me a message that was on China’s restricted list I would delete the message, and never answer any of her texts or view them. I find it a breach of privacy, and should never be allowed to happen at any circumstances.
I don't think there any ways to monitor Internet communication without abusing personal privacy. If I had a friend sending text messages to me and I knew the words were restricted I'd deny that I ever got the text and delete them. All of the countries using the monitoring systems surprised me I never knew there were people monitoring Internet communication.
China using the monitoring system surprised me because, China isn’t known for many terrorist groups or it doesn’t have a lot of terrorism. I think message monitoring should be allowed and they should ban voice (Skype) monitoring. If I worked in the NSA I would look for specific words like Terrorism to prevent abusing and eavesdropping on personal privacy. If somebody sent me words that are on China’s restricted list, I would contact the government and notify them about the words.
I was really surprised that China would have Skype surveillance system. That wasn't only thing that surprised me. Australia and Germany was also tapping on people's conversation. When I was reading this article I got curious how many people is needed to hear all the conversation that is filtered. I think it is really stupid, trying to catch people through skype. Some people can joke around and say "Hey the plan to bomb white house is going according to plan" and you can't arrest those people.
Listing to people's private message is not right.
I think that the rules in China are too strict. People should have the right to do what they want. But that still does not mean that they should look at websites that are not suitable for people. But they do not have the right to listen in on peoples phone calls or look at their text messages.
I was surprised to hear the there are monitoring issues in Germany. I think text messaging monitoring is taking it too far. I would feel violated if I found out there was someone reading everything I sent to my friends and family. I think monitoring email messages is alright; only if it's for national security. I wouldn't take the job if I had to monitor people's internet communication. It would be too dangerous. If I had a friend who sent me a text message with the particular words that could get both of us into trouble, I would turn him/her in. I don't want to be blamed for my friend's mistake.
I always knew that china was monitoring the world but I thought it was threw satilites, not the internet.China can make alot of money by doing this.other countrys should do the same because it may stop or catch terrorists from doing anything. What does Skypes company have to do with it,I still dont get it?
It's no surprise that a country like China would monitor the internet because of the number of minorities they have. It is surprising that they shut down google for a month so rebel groups couldn't communicate through the internet.
I believe that monitoring private messages, and listening to private phone calls is not appropriate. That is because I think that people should have some sense of privacy, and they should not be afraid to say what they fell about the country, and its rules or laws. However I still think that people should not get too free, especially if that person holds important information that has to do with a company, or the government. However if that happens then I think that those people should get punished for what they did.
When you have a very strict counrty, there are a lot of restrictions. If the Internet has to be monitored so that people don't get "dangerous" ideas then so be it. I already knew that there were countries that did this and I am not surprised that China is one of them. It is a communist country and is highly sensitive. I also found some Internet limitations in Syria. They had disconnected a certain e-mail server, but I do not know why. It is just like in war. If you think there is a threat to the wellbeing of your country, then you take measures to eliminate that threat. It's just the way it works.
