We have talked about people who download music and videos. We have looked at the reactions of the companies that produce these products. This week we will consider the ISPs, the companies that provide the bandwidth for using the Internet. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.
Is your bandwidth at home controlled in some way? If so, how? We have all experienced the Internet being slow at times. Who do you think is responsible for this? What do you think ISPs should do about people who use more than their share of the bandwidth by downloading music and video? Are the companies right in doing what they are doing? How would you react to this?
Metering Internet Use Article

I think that this idea is great way for companies but it affects people who want internet but will not use as much as some people. Lately everything has been all about money, now a days their is a price everything. Their is a possibility that people could stop using the internet, although companies which depend on the internet like ebay, will have to pay a lot, which contributes to the internet agencies.
My bandwidth at home is controlled. I have a 1-megabyte bandwidth at home, which is used by 4 computers and it is still up to speed. If I exceed my download amount the company sends me an email telling me that I have exceeded my download amount or bill. I believe that the Internet can sometimes be slow because of people who upload or download huge sized files or videos etc. I think ISPs should sue the people who use more of their share of the bandwidth. Or they can create a program on the Internet for limiting the amount of download and upload of music and videos. And this program should be installed on the Internet modems that people buy for Internet. The companies are charging extra money when you exceed your Internet usage amount. I think this is fair and okay, and it is their right to do it because they are giving us a better future for the Internet. And my reaction would be a happy one because they are saving the future of our Internet.
I think that it is very good for companies to give away maybe one song or two from an album and then people like the music and they will buy the whole album. some people just download the song and then they don't buy the album then the company will loose money on that
I didn't know all the computer users had bandwith. If I use to much internet, sooner or later my internet starts to slow down. I think it is really stupid to have such a thing as limited bandwith for internet. Some internet users use a lot of internet and after one week their internet is extreamly slow.
At this moment I don’t have Internet, so I have no idea if my bandwidth is controlled. Back at my old home I don’t think mine was controlled because I would download stuff everyday but the Internet would still be up to speed most of the time. There were times where my Internet would be as slow as a snail, but that wouldn’t happen often. It is a good idea for companies to meter your use as for downloading, but then again you should be able limit yourself by knowing how much you’ve used.
I don’t know if my bandwidth is controlled because I don’t have Internet. But when I was in Switzerland I think my bandwidth was controlled because when I downloaded things of the Internet, it wouldn’t be as quick. I agree with what companies are doing to people who use more than their share of the bandwidth by downloading music and video. But I also believe that we should be able to download as much as we want with in reason.
We do not know if our bandwidth is controlled in some way. I honestly don't think anyone is responsibel because the internet is used all over the world and I think that maybe the problem. I think the ISPs should at least be abel to lock them out of the internet until they pay it off. I agree with them and I wouldn't react surprised about what they might have done to my connection to the internet.
I think that this is a program that would help people know how much to download from the internet, and know how much space they have before they get to their limitation. I think that if this plan works, and gets download in every home, then people would not have to stop using the internet because they are worried that they would get a very high bill. I wonder about what companies would do, that is becuase it said in the article, that companies' usage of internet is not very easy to messure.
I think that these companies are doing the wrong thing. If people want to download large files or videos then it is their parogative and they should not be charged for this. It is pointless. I don't think that anyone is complaining about having slow Internet all the time or of lack of bandwidth. These people who are not downloading these large files are content with what they have and don't need more. The other people, however, who are downloading, might need the information that is being downloaded and forcing them to pay is just going to make them angry. I have had Internet problems, but those are mainly due to the distance between my computer and the repeater. It is also due to the connection speed that i get. I get 54mbps, acording to my computer, on the wireless at full power, but if I wass wired I would get 100mbps. I actually get the same speed with both, it is just the numbers. I could get a faster connection, such as 2000mbps (2gbps), but that would cost more. The downloaders and the non-dowloaders balance eachother out and there is no reason to make people pay for nothing.
My bandwidth is not controlled in such a bad way. There is a limit to how many mbps is available but we get about 400 usually. I think people who are downloading music and watching videos are too blame. They are using all the internet and that leaves non for the rest of us. I still have to admit I download music all the time. I think the ISPs should charge people who use more than their share. This way everyone is paying for their share. Although many people reject this idea, it's the fair thing to do. I believe that the companies are doing the right thing. I would be mad if my internet provider put a limit on my bandwidth.
I don't know if my home's bandwidth is controlled. The internet sometimes slows down because if all these people go on to a website then the internet will be slow. Also, another way for internet to slow down is if people or companies are downloading music, games or video, then that takes a lot of bytes. If the company gave two to three free songs as samples and people like them, then they'll buy the CD or album and that way the people are happy, the internet isn't slow and the company makes money.
Metering internet use?! Why would someone do that. If you pay the same price as the guy next to me we have to have the same speed. In England it took me one day to download something of the internet but here it took me four days!
I agree people that download videos and music all the time make our internet slower. Like Tarek said his bandwidth does not get more then 400mbps. Thats the same as what happens to me. All what the companies care about would be money, so if people are paying they should be allowed to download what they wish.
I am not aware that my bandwidth is monitored by anyone, but it probably is. I think that the reason that the internet is slow sometimes is because other people are on the internet too and they are taking up a lot of space. I think that the companies' actions are justified only if users are really going overboard and taking up a lot of bandwidth. Of course if that happened to me I think that I would be very mad.
