Parents Are Unsure

This week instead of reading an article you will view a presentation that has been converted to a PDF format. To see this file you will go to the assignments section of our course on Blackboard. View the presentation, think about what it says, and write a reflective comment on this blog.

The presentation summarizes a survey of parents that was conducted by Common Sense Media and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. As you read the results, think about how digital media use relates to you. Which of the parent opinions do you agree with and which ones do you think are wrong? Do you agree with the parents’ opinion about communication and collaboration and how well the Web helps students learn these skills? Respond to the following quote: “Our kids are adapting to change at breakneck speed. Adults who nurture children are trying to catch up to ensure that the new, ubiquitous digital diet is balanced and educational.” What can you do to help your parents? How should we help your parents understand the potential and the risks of digital media? Do you agree with the teachers’ opinions about video games, MP3 players, and cell phones? What recommendations would you make to educate parents and teachers? Can you think of any creative uses for video games, MP3 players, and cell phones in education?

The way that parents can quickly use and understand technology is if they try it out themselves, however something that I do have to disagree with is that finding out about it from news sources. Those kind of sources are of no benefit to a parent or their child and the only way to actually understand about the digital device is to use it themselves, then they can understand it themselves.
I would also have to agree with the site about the communication, because how else will the parents understand and also it will show that it, the digital media, does not take away from their social skills, unless of course the child becomes a total gamer. Also, it greatly helps with school, and since children are learning about technology at an alarming rate, it will greatly help them to succeed in the future.

Wooksoon////// I agree with some parent's thinking. Many people think that new technology or education which are good to their daughter or son, they want to make their daughter or son to study it. Many people think that the best knowledge is to know new skill of study or thought. The skill of digital media would be infinitive skill and could be used in varity of ways. Nowadays, the internet is the most important thing to our life. But, from digital media, we can create part of our internet world. I think that learning new skill would help his/her entire life.

In my opinion, parents are almost always wrong but I have to agree with them 100% about this survey. For example, they said video games and stuff like that aren’t good and they’re right. Video games, MP3 players, and other things are fun, but they’re not good for you. Also, I agree with their opinion about communication and communication and how well the Web helps students learn these skills. If you think about it, how can you actually communicate and have friends on the computer with skills? It doesn’t make any sense.
“Our kids are adapting to change at breakneck speed. Adults who nurture children are trying to catch up to ensure that the new, ubiquitous digital diet is balanced and educational.” This quote is true. As kids, we are changing and adapting to change especially with digital media. I don’t really know what to do to help my parents because everything is complicated in the world and everyone has their own perspective of looking at things. Furthermore, I agree with the teachers’ opinions about video games. Although, I can think of a creative idea of how to use video games, MP3 players, and cell phone in education. Teachers can make fun learning into video games. For example, if you were taking math, you would have equations and solve them using games. It’s not a good idea, but it’s fun and educational. I can’t think of any recommendation to make to educate parents and teachers because I don’t really think that they’re doing anything wrong.

According to my personal experience I have found out that parents are mostly always right. They know what is good for their children and what’s bad. In this survey they pointed out that video games, mp3 players etc… are bad to us which is true because they do harm our bodies in some ways. Another thing that was pointed out in the survey is about communication and collaboration which I agree with them about the web does help us as students learn these skills. “Our kids are adapting to change at breakneck speed. Adults who nurture children are trying to catch up to ensure that the new, ubiquitous digital diet is balanced and educational.” Like I pointed out before parents are always right and they know what’s good and what’s bad for us, the quote that they have said about us is true because we are adapting to change at breakneck speed. When you ask me how I could help my parents to tell you the truth I don’t really know how to help them, same goes to everyone who wants to help I don’t know how you guys can help. Me as a student, I agree with the teachers opinions about video games etc… there is nothing wrong with what the teachers are doing so I don’t think there is any way for us to help them. I would recommend that we should start using video games to help us learn more about our studies. Technology keeps on getting better so let us use it.

In my opinion, parents are almost right. I tell my parents I would going to watch Internet Lecture with electric dictionary but when I get it I watch Movies or play games. Using digital devise is up to user's mind.
I also agree with the site about the communication. Because it makes different to how they shows. We should make them to used to the things. And show them how it's useful.
I think video games can help education for teachers. When context is filled with science stuff. But I'm not sure that MP3 player and cell phones can help the education. Because usually I saw negative affects in education.

The risk of digital media is that people can do bad things on it. It might hurt the computer or even you. I agree with some teachers’ opinions about video games, MP3 players, and cell phones. The recommendation to educate parents and teachers is that technology is really important and that we use it everyday in our lives. We would not survive without technology. We can use it while doing sports and stuff

The parents who are in the military might be able to understand some technology, but most like my mother is incapable of knowing how to use technology. I have always tried to get my mom to do it herself but she will never try. It does help to use it like a remote control for a tv, it has lots of buttons, but it also says what each does, but some are hard to understand what they do. Parents just want their children to exceed in life not for them to learn more about it. That was in the past. It also depends on the age of the children’s parents for knowing technology. My father is a computer geek and he admits he is. He can do so much other stuff than me when it comes to fixing a problem. Its all about their personality of if they actually want to learn about it or not.

I agree with the parents which strongly agree with digital media as a learning tool, but I disagree with the idea that the parents think that social network are bad for the child. Yes I agree that the digital media will help the student and the internet will help more than books. I agree that kids adapting to new technology, but it also has some potential for the Child's future. I can help them adapt to the new software and help them with Excel. Show the parents are digital media projects and achievements. No, I don’t agree with the teacher’s idea of cell phones and MP3 players because they can both be used in case of an emergency. There can be video games that have educational features.

Parents these days have no idea what technology brings there kids, because parents are too lazy to go out and try it for them selfs. Because if you're learning it from someone else you have no idea what you're actually learning, because the person you're learning it from might have a different opinion of it, not know anything about it or even totally for it. So the only way you're ever going to understand anything about technology is to go out and try it for yourself.

I believe that technology and other digital media sources actually boost a childs intellect. For example whoever said that video games are only places where you go to shoot imaginary creatures. For some games that's the case, but there are many other games that provide knowledge to young children.
