Mobile Music, but Lower Quality

You probably own a portable music device, such as an iPod. They are seen everywhere and enjoyed by people of all ages. This week’s article looks at how these devices have influenced the quality of the sound that we hear through iPods and compressed computer files. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.

Do you agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media everywhere except in music? Can you hear the difference between compressed music files and music on CDs? How often do you listen to music on CDs? Respond to the quote from Mr. Fremer about music “It was an activity. It is no longer consumed as an event that you pay attention to.” Do you care about the quality of sound when you listen to music? How much would you be willing to pay for a stereo system?

I agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media everywhere except music. Music and the quality of sound has remained fairly the same. I cannot hear the difference between compressed music files and music on CD. They all sound the same to me. I almost never listen to music on CD. Listening to music has become portable over the past few years, so I don’t find any use in listening to CDs anymore. I agree with Mr. Fremer. Since music has become more transportable, people no longer just sit down and listen to music. It has become an ordinary part of our lives, so we do something else while we listen and we don’t pay much attention to it. As long as the sound is acceptable, I do not care a lot about the quality of sound when I listen to music. I wouldn’t actually spend my money on a stereo system, because I feel that I could use the money for something more current and useful.

No, I think there has been some technological advance in music as well in other media. I mean people used to listen to record players, then the CD players come out, and now it's the MP3 players. In fact, I can not tell the difference between compressed music files and music on CDs. I rarely listen to music on CDs. I agree with Mr. Fremer's opinion. I am listening to music as I am doing this homework and I am not paying that much attention. I do care about the quality of sound when I listen to music. I would not want to buy a stereo sysyem, unless someone gave it to me for free.

I actually would both agree and disagree. I agree because music has in this age of technology it has almost reached its pinnacle. But I disagree because I think that music has come a very long way since last year or for that matter last week. I can’t really but that’s because I don’t really listen to music safe for music that is available in book stores. So that means that this difference is lost on people like me. I don’t really listen to music all that often CD or otherwise. I would say that while this is becoming more and more true that with the reliance on technology for every aspect of ours lives grows so too will the commonality of quotes like this one. Granted that I listen to relatively little to no music to do nonetheless care deeply for the quality of the music, lecture so forth that I am listening to. I don’t really consider a stereo system a practical thing to have for the kind of listening that I typically partake of.

I do agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media everywhere except in music. However, I cannot hear the difference between compressed files and music CD’s. I only listen to CD’s when I’m downloading them to my iTunes. This quote by Mr. Fremer is true, now we listen to music while doing something, such as playing video games, surfing the Internet, etc. I don’t really care about sound when I listen to music. I would not be willing to pay much for a stereo system.

I do not agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media everywhere except in music because it sounds a lot clearer now from when they first started recording it. I believe that it is really clear now-a-days. I can definitely hear the difference from the music that is compressed music files and music on CDs. I listen to music from CD’s everyday because I have downloaded all of my music CD’s onto my iTunes on my computer, and from there, to my iPod, and I listen to music on my iPod every day! I believe that his quote “It was an activity. It is no longer consumed as an event that you pay attention to, is wrong because there are music festivals, concerts, gatherings, and parties in which music is played during them. I care about the quality of sound when you listen to music a lot. I would be willing to pay as much as I would need for a stereo system that would give me a good quality of sound, and clarity of it (and I already have done that)!

To tell you the truth, I have no idea that there are types and quality of music because I never pay 100% attention to the song. Usually when I listen to music is when I feel lonely or everything around me is too quite, I just listen to my music so I can either pay more attention to what I m working on or just to block the lonely feelings away. Sometimes I can tell that some corrupted music files sound weird but I never actually pay attention to them because as long as I can hear them, the quality doesn’t matter. I don’t listen to my music that often because usually I don’t have my itouch with me, the only time I listen to my music is when I am alone and I have my itouch with me. For me a high quality music doesn’t really matter except if it is really bad, for my if it is decent enough for me to understand everything without the buzzing sound then it is okay except if the music is my favorite music then I would expect it to be in high quality, the highest I would go for a really good stereo would be around 1500$ no more than that.

I partially agree that there have been no technological advances in music. Generally, music is music. The only thing that actually changed is the music style. The technological advancement are computers and special programs, in this case. There are even some songs that only consist of computerised-instrumentals and a human voice. Actually I can hear the difference. But it is not too big. I enjoy listening to CD's on my stereo system, but I most often listen to my music through the computer at home because there I can just pick what song I want instead of changing CD's all the time. How music was in the past ... I don't know. But today, it has become a natural thing to do. Music can do a lot. You can listen to it just for fun, but in some cases people say that it can also help concentrate or other things. I do care about the quality of the music I listen to. Even though all my digital music is compressed, I use some tricks to get the most out of it. Today, I am used to it and I don't really know any "better" quality.

I agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media everywhere except in music. No I am not able to hear a clear or even a slight difference between compressed music files and music on CD’s. I don’t listen to CD’s that often anymore. Now with iPods CD’s have become not so great. However I do listen to CD’s when I’m in the car sometimes. I agree with the quote made by Mr. Fremer about music. Today, because of the technology we listen to music most of the time and it has just become a part of our daily lives. Yes I do care about the quality of sound when I listen to music. I’d like to be able to enjoy it and without the acceptable quality you can’t do that. Although I love music and care for the quality, I would not be willing to pay a great amount for a stereo system.

Well, I think that technological advances in the media is everywhere except in music because since music isn’t a physical thing that you can hold, its have to see any improvements. People today listen to music to listen to it and enjoy it, not to see what technological advances are there. I can never hear the difference between compressed music files and music on CDs because its music, they all sound the same to me. I just listen to music to listen to it. I barely listen to music on a CD because of my iPod Touch however, my father does all the time, he as an extended CD collection. Referring to the quote, I really don’t care about the quality f music unless it is extremely bad like I cannot hear the words. I could not pay a single cent for a stereo system because I have my iPod and I can get speakers.

I do agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media everywhere except in music… I think these technological advances are ignored because people are focusing on practicality rather than quality. I don't usually hear a clear difference between compressed music files and music on CDs, but there are times where I prefer to listen to the original recording, such as one on a CD because I feel like I can feel the beat better. It is true that many people listen to music while doing something else, as a background – in fact I am doing that right now – but there are many people that listen to music just enjoy it, I am one of them, although I sometimes listen to music in the background. Yes, actually I do care about the quality of sound when I listen to music; I love music and it's a big part of my life and if the quality of music I'm listening to is bad I'd rather not listen to it, I like enjoying the music and feeling it inside me, with bad quality I can't seem to feel that. Honestly I don't think I would buy a stereo, I mean I would love having better quality for my music but I already have a stereo, my IPod, my speakers and my computer… I'm good now so I can't really think about it:). -Leen

Yes, I think music’s quality going down a lot. Yes, the CDs are much better than compressed music files. Better quality. I listen to CDs when I have the time and when I really want to listen to an old song. I don’t think music should be an activity, for me, music is a passion; it is something everyone should pay attention to though. I think they should know how precious it is. I do care about the quality of the music, yet I don’t pay for it. I download- it’s not like our favorite songs are available here. I’m willing to pay as much as I need, I would not need that great of a stereo, I would rather buy good, yet cheep one, than small Bose Headphones for 200 bucks.

Well I think there is a bit of technology that improves audio because on my ipod I have these options called equalizers which allows me to reduce, increase, treble or bass. No I don’t hear the difference and why would I? I get a song to listen to not to meticulously check if it’s good. Cd's are yesterday’s news, everyone I know stores their file on their computers, and they get their songs, from torrents site, and/or itunes. I think its true, because in the past people and tribes used music as a form of communication and religious, and artistic events, but now music is used to cover up silence. Quality is a bit of an issue but like really small with me, I mean I don’t want to have a song that has really high treble or bass, so yeah quality matters. I wouldn’t buy a stereo player cause I would only use it for the radio, I might as well buy and alarm clock/ radio dock for my ipod.

No I don’t agree because music has advance since the past because for example everybody had stereos then C players, and now ipods. I cannot tell the difference between compressed music files and music on CDs. Now that there has been a creation of the ipods I don’t listen to music on CDs. When I listen to music I don’t tend to care much for sound quality. Since stereo systems are not used as much I would pay up to $200 dollars or less. I dont believe paying alot of a stereo today since less people have stop using them.

Yes I do agree. No actually I cannot hear the difference between compressed file and music on CDs. don't listen to music on CD except in the car or when my ipod is broken.I agree with Mr. Framer's quote we listen to music while doing to many things at one time. Yes I do care about the sound of the music I listen to.I don't think I would buy a stereo system unless I got it a as present.

I agree with that statement, because the quality of music has really gone down. I can hear the difference between CD music and music I find on the Internet or somewhere like that. I listen to CD music every now and then, but I listen mostly to music from my Ipod. I think that the statement is true, because before, listening to music was something that people did as an activity, whereas now people listen to music while doing something else, and not really paying attention. I care about the quality of music when I listen, and I don’t like listening to music that is of bad quality. I have a stereo system at home, and although I don’t use it that often, I wouldn’t sell it.

If the music is acceptable and the sound is clear enough, so yes I do care about the quality of sound when I listen to music.

Music has made some technology advancements pretty much everything has. NO. I listen to CD's in the car. I agree on the statement music is not a event anymore. I care very much about the quality of music. I would pay around 100$ for a stereo.

I agree that there have been technological advances in the quality of media except music because the quality of music has stayed the same since long time ago. I can hear that the CDs music is much clearer than the downloaded tracks. I rarely listen to music on CDs; I usually download it from any website. I care for the quality of the music I listen to because that what makes it better to hear. I am willing to pay a lot of money for a stereo system.
