To Twitter or not

Twitter, Tweet, RT – are you familiar with these terms? This week we look at a social networking and micro-blogging service that offers an interesting form of communication. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.

Have you ever used Twitter? Do you know anyone who uses Twitter? What are some potential uses that you can see for Twitter in school? How might you use Twitter in your personal life? What rules would you propose for Twitter?

Twitter: a common past-time or an educational and interactive form of communication? This is what most Twitter new-comers ask themselves when they hear about it, but most people simply decide to rely on Facebook as their internet “energizer” and at the same time, their interent “time drainer”. As for me, I have never used Twitter and I am not familiar with anybody who has. Like most people, I am caught up with all of Facebook’s capabilities to the point where I do not have the time to get to learn how to use other internet past-times, such as Twitter. However, through this article, I have come to the realization that Twitter could be valuable in both educational and personal ways. First of all, if I were in school and needed immediate information on valuable websites or links for a certain topic, I could ask about this on Twitter and get results in a short matter of time, instead of pouring through directories. In addition, if I was given the opportunity in school to choose my own topic for a research project, I could ask other Twitter followers for their opinions concerning this matter and get many different possible topics and thus, get a feel for the certain topics that are out there. Then, I could search these topics on the internet and see what information is available on them, causing me to then narrow down all my topics to just one, based on which one interests me more and has a good amount of information available concerning it. On the other hand, if I was using Twitter for my personal life, I could ask other Twitter followers for new movie releases and their personal opinions concerning them. I could also ask them about what they think I could do on a Thursday night and what places would be cool to hang out in. By this, I would probably get tons of replies and then be able to draw my own “personal conclusions”. Last, but not least, there are several rules that I would propose for Twitter. First of all, I think that Twitter users should only use it when they have free time because just like Facebook, Twitter can also be a real time consumer and distract a person from other important things, such as their school work. Moreover, Twitter users should not always go into this new technology thinking of it as a fun and amusing experience. Sometimes, the purpose of Twitter can be to discuss new environmental risks or global issues, such as the bombings that took place in India a little while back. As a result, Twitter followers should be careful and serious with their opinions concerning such topics. Furthermore, Twitter users should be “open-minded” when they use this technology. What I mean is that followers of this technology should always be open to other people’s opinions concerning certain topics and ready to discuss things and possibly learn from other Twitter followers. More importantly, Twitter followers should view it as a learning experience more than a frivolous past-time, which will allow them to truly benefit from the capabilities that Twitter offers, such as educational ones. I guess I might experiment with Twitter for a while and look at all of its benefits because to be quite honest, Facebook seems as if it does not stand a chance next to Twitter.

Personally, I have never used Twitter, which to me is quite surprising because I am an addict of just about every other “Internet Time Drain.” I use Facebook half of my time at home, without it, I am lost. So no, I do not use Twitter, but if I had known about it sooner, I might possibly have made myself an account on it. I also do not know anyone else that uses Twitter, if I did know someone that had it, I would have gotten it. Maybe no one I know uses Twitter because it is more directed to an older group. I do not know. However, I do not think any of my friends have an account on Twitter. Some potential uses for Twitter in school are things such as quick discussion boards on an article. Sharing homework quickly can also be a potential use, if you have your teacher as a follower, or you follow her. To be quite honest, I do not see many uses for Twitter relating to school. Possibly, students can go and talk about and discuss assignments there—but I see it just like any other social networking site. Ah, personal life; much easier. In my personal life, I would simply use it to tell my friends things and to show people YouTube links, Facebook links, and talk about everything in life. I could possibly use it to reconnect with some friends that do not have Facebook, but have a Twitter. I could also use it to be my judging self and look at other people’s followers, and how many they have (not specifically me, people in general). I would definitely use it to post up links and get replies, or put up jokes and find out what people thought. A few rules I would personally propose for Twitter for my own satisfaction would be: First, do not put up lame videos or lame links that you know no one will care to look at. Second, follow people you can keep track of, do not just follow someone so that others think both you and the person you are following are cool. Third, and finally, don’t make an account then never use it, it is useless and somewhat annoying. I do not think I want a Twitter, seems confusing, and Facebook is quite satisfying for the time being.

I’ve never used, or even heard of Twitter, so, no one I know uses Twitter, or I would’ve probably heard about it. It would make some projects a lot easier, or maybe if you need some sites that have some information on a certain topic, because sometimes, using search engines just aren’t enough. If I made an account, I’d use it for my personal life if I was just interested in a topic that I found, or if I needed help in something- same things as I’d use if for school really. I don’t think that the site really needs rules, it just depends on what your using it for. Now, until I’ve actually used the interactive site, I can’t really make any judgment or what rules should be created for Twitter.

What is twitter? it doesn't seem like such a great thing to me how can it have 6 million users if it's nothing more but another social site, like facebook or myspace and its based around ego and the "me" theme. everything people write is about themselves on these things, it is really annoying. I am doing this, I am doing that, I am happy, I am sad, its always the case. and i dont understand how twitter works, is it just another form of facebook?

I have never heard of the twitter terms and I've never used twitter.

I've heard of twitter and people that use it but I've never actually seen anybody use it.

I wouldn't use twitter for school, it would end up being used just like facebook.

I don't think that i would use twitter so i wouldn't have any rule to give them, except, don't be another facebook.

No I have never used twitter. I personally think it's a good waste of my time and it's very useless, I could use my life time wisely other than type every second of my life on a website. Yes I know some nerds that use twitter, and they tell me that they are addicted and they type every second of their life, one of them told me that when he wakes up he types "I am now awake." Twitter might be helpful in school because students might interact with each other which teaches them how to work in groups. Twitter can only be used in my life if I am really bored because I personally think that only the people with no life and the people that have nothing to do use twitter. One rule that I would propose to twitter is that nobody can log in for more than 4 hours a day, because it might create health issues if you do play for 5 hours or more a day.

Honestly, I have never even heard of Twitter up until a few days ago, while reading a comic book. I thought it to be a Facebook clone, and eventually I was right. Nobody I know has ever used Twitter, as all of them either have a Facebook or MySpace, or none at all. For such a supposedly popular website, I was surprised that so many people had not known about it.Twitter is probably no more useful in school than Facebook is, as they are based around the same idea: A social networking device. The only possible advantages are that you could get your point across and deliver information quickly and immediately. It allows people to express themselves, and say what they want, ad whats going on throughout the day. That is also what Facebook allows. I would only use Twitter in my life to communicate my beliefs and ideas and current news to my friends who are far away. I would use in my social life also to talk to my friends over the country and world, as communication is one of the things Twitter is good at. I honestly couldn't give any rues for Twitter or any advice, as I have never even used it. The only thing I could think of would be to offer the same services as Facebook, advertise to make itself more popular, and make it completely free, easy to join and simple to operate, thus increasing the popularity. Those are the things I think they could do to make it more popular and better.

Yes, I have, but I never really knew what it was. I think I know one person that uses it, not quite sure, and never thought of making an account… I really don’t think it’s really necessary, I already have a facebook, and that’s far enough :O
In school? Probably make your assignment a whole lot easier, but it would probably end up being used the same way as FB, myspace, netlog, bebo or any other same type of websites. I don’t think I need such a thing as twitter in my life, but if one day I end up using it, it’d probably be for some school thing (example: homework).
I can’t think of any advice to give them, as I never even used it.

I don't know what Twitter is but I know my neighbor uses it she says its like MSN and Skype, I was thinking of downloading it but then I was too lazy to look for it, because frankly I think they are all the same, Skype, MSN, etc. But the school does use Skype; Rumor has it that job interviews are being done through Skype in Major companies. I was thinking of downloading it because what’s wrong with chatting to your friends with different communication software. I am thinking that we could use Twitter n a snow day or after a long weekend, like to know what homework we have or to know what day it is after when come back from a long weekend. I would use Twitter in my personal life because it’s a way to communicate for free. I think that the laws we should have in school is that there should be separate user names for students than home or personal uses because that way we could more focus on the things we need to work on. So basically Twitter will be a good addition to our school and our personal lives but I haven't used it but I am willing to try it.

I don’t think I have ever used a twitter or even heard of a twitter. I have a friend who has talked to me about twitter and saying what it is and what it is used for which is some form of communication between friends like msn or skype. We can use it to inform others about upcoming events if school has been closed for some kind of reason. I would use twitter in talking to my friends from other countries. The rules that I would put in twitter are not to hack anyone’s private information or you will be banned from it. Another one would be that you should not sexually harass or send notes to people who you don’t know. I think that this twitter is a good source for everything because you can use it to communicate with your friends for free in the Internet.

I have never used Twitter before, I have never even heard it. I don’t know anyone who uses Twitter. After reading the article it seems like it can make projects easier to deal with, but it cannot be famous as Facebook, Msn, hotmail, and yahoo, because no one knows it, and I don’t think anyone will start using it. I think that it will help us in school since we are not allowed to enter to facebook. I think that this maybe better than other search engines to be used in school. I would only use it to communicate and post ideas. I am willing to learn and use it,

I have never heard of Twitter, and don’t know of any one who has. I don’t see Twitter as something that might help in school. Our school has already given us many research/information based websites to use and frankly some of them work. So I don’t think something like Twitter would ever help us in our school work. I think Twitter is not really successful compared to Facebook or MySpace. In personal life, no one I know has a Twitter account. Therefore, I don’t need one because no one has one. One rule for Twitter would be to never "kick out" an account even if they violate the rules.
