Europeana, begins life Thursday

A new European digital library will open soon. This week’s article looks at some of the content, contributors and the countries involved. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.

What is your explanation for why France is contributing such a great percentage of items in the collection? Give an example of how you might use some of the resources that will be offered through Europeana. The article mentions a gap of 20th century material. How would you address this problem? What is one thing that you would like to see included in the Europeana library?

I think France is contributing such a great percentage of items in the collection just because they have a lot to say/ share. I would use the resources offered through Europeana for my own knowledge, for a paper I might have to write, or even for a project. The information on Europeana would give a paper, or project more juice, like it would be more in depth, and interesting rather than getting information on Wikipedia, etc. I think what they mean by the gap in the 20th century would mean like, there isn’t much information they have to put on Europeana. For example not many important useful things did happen in the 20th century which is why there would be a gap. One thing I would like to see on Europeana is information about the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

DIGITAL LIBRARY?! People don't even go to a real one let alone a digital library. I can bet you that this digital library will close down. France is a pretty artistic place so I can understand why France would want in. Still not many people go to France like in the past so they need the tourists. This place obviously isn't going to come cheap so I wouldn't bother trying it out. The internet stop something called reading and those two don't mix.

I find that France is contributing such a great percentage of items to show what they have say. I would use this information in a research project or an essay on the Europeana library. To me I really don't see a problem. I honestly don't know what I want to see on Europeana.

I believe France is contributing the most because it has one of the most unique histories of all the European countries. I would use Europeana if I was doing a research project on World War I and I wanted to learn about the French involvement in the war. I would allow historians to contribute items or articles that may help explain the 20th century in Europe. I would really like to see lots of detailed information on World War I and each countries involvement in the war. I would like to see maps created by the military that show attack strategies against other countries.

As it says in the article, I think that France is trying to promote its culture by contributing so much to the collection. I could see myself using Europeana if I was doing a research project on an artist or painting that required me to visit a museum. Instead of visiting the museum, I would use Europeana. So that you could be able to access 20th century material without a problem, Europeana could strike a deal with these sources of information who felt that they were being violated and somehow reach a conclusion so that Europeana could access the information and not have copyright infringement. One thing I'd like to see included in the library is videos. I'm not talking about YouTube-type videos, I'm talking about real videos made by official sources that somehow relate to the content on the site. These would be more educational-type videos.

I think that France is contributing such a big amount of items in this collection because they would like to share the information they have with other people that are interested in those subjects. I would use the information given by Europeana for a school assignment, or for my own knowledge. I think that what they mean by the gap in the 20th century is that most people that use the internet are not really interested in getting an education about different subjects in life. That is because most people that use the internet are the youth, and as I said, they are not interested in getting education which they do not have to know for a grade. I would like to see some information about Alexander the Great's battles. That is because it would help me with my project which I am doing for the Computer class.

The reason France is contributing so much of their historical papers and other stuff is because it makes feel proud as someone from Brussels had later on stated. I think that Europeana will be a great site for historical papers and reports. What I would like to see in the Europeana site is old literature: poems, novels, etc. I think that Europeana is a great way to have a museum right at in your computer, which means no one has to take the time to walk to a museum of this sort in a long time.

My explanation for France contributing such a great percentage of items are, first of all France started this project and they are all the time so eager to spread their culture to the world. We can see audio/video, books, music scores, and other items that has no copyright. For the 20th century gap, I think they won't be any way to put the material unless, if the item doesn’t have a copyright you can upload it. One thing I want to see from this library is some music scores by Mozart. I was really surprised to see that France is contributing such a great percentage of stuff.

I don't quite understand what the point of a digital library would be. The only benefit that I see would be that the books could not get damaged as easily. The online part would be useful for creating papers for school or university. People don't go to libraries that often because they can't be bothered to actually get up and go, but this wil let them just get online and find what they need.

My explanation is that france is stupid. I might use europeana to write research papers. I would address this problem by asking a PHD professor. I would like to see space magazines included n the article

I think what they are doing is dumb. I would use the resources for school and even when I am at school. It could be a good thing because it could help me at school if I forgot something at home. I would like to see magazines on soccer and my favorite soccer team.

I find that France is contributing such a great percentage of items in the collection because it is a good way of exposure, and having free advertising and informative pages. They are saving lots of money because they don't have to pay for advertising pages. I would mainly use the resources offered by Europeana for school assignments such as an essay paper. I might contribute some information that I know from the 20th century. Otherwise, I don't really mind the gap. I personally wouldn't even try out this site because it isn't a genre I appeal to.

Having a digital library ready to narrow down the search for information and having it in multiple forms such as documents, audio, images, and video is very convenient and will save a lot of time. I could use this source for a history class or visit different places that I wanted to on-line. I think France wants to be more involved because it has the most pride in its history, arts, and culture. A lot of important things happened in the 20th century such as the rise in computer technology, but like the article says there are copyright laws for recent information to be downloaded. I would like to see the Big Ben Tower in London.

I think that a digital library is good because then you don't have to go to a real on to get you books when you can get them online. It would be good because then you don have to get information from Google or Wikipedia. The digital library will probably not be very good for such a long time because why bother when you have some thing faster.
