Google and Its Pledge

Four years ago, Google promised to use some of its money to “make the world a better place.” The philanthropy unit that Google has set up will spend up to $175 million in its first round of grants and investments over the next three years. Go to the link below and read the article about Google’s philanthropy. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read and thought about the article and answers my questions.

Do organizations like Google have a responsibility to “make the world a better place?” The company is like other companies in making grants. How do you feel about the untraditional things it will be doing? Which initiative do you think should be their highest priority and why? Is the comparison of deciding how to spend Google’s money like a saint wandering the streets of Benares, on the banks of the Ganges accurate or is the problem different?

No, I believe that organizations like Google don’t have a responsibility to “make the world a better place”. Google is well known throughout the world and if it’s well known, then they should start helping people with this organization but I don’t feel that Google has a responsibility to “make the world a better place” because as you can see, other companies don’t do that. Although Google is going to start doing untraditional things, I feel that it will, as they say, “make the world a better place”. It will make the world a better place because Googles’ organization wants to help out in almost all the 6 continents around the world which will make a big difference.
The initiative that I think should be their highest priority is the “predict and prevent” because, as Harriet Rubin said, we must detect a disease before it becomes pandemic. Diseases can spread throughout a country or a continent rapidly especially causing poor people to die because they wouldn’t have the medication. The comparison of deciding how to spend Google’s money like a saint wandering the streets of Benares, on the banks of the Ganges is accurate because, in my opinion, Google is trying to help as many people as this organization can.

Like Diana said, Google doesn't have a responsibility to make the world a better place, and saying that almost makes it sound like they are a bit stuck up and frowning upon other people who might not be doing much of anything. But, all of the big organizations and famous people are doing things to help the world so it was only a matter of time before something like Google began.
What Google is doing is good however, because they are helping the needy countries of the world so that they can get the education and supplies that they need to survive. Like it said, if their money can educate 1000 girls in one state of India, they all have the potential to do something to help their community or the world. So, what Google is doing is greatly appreciated, a person can't help but wonder if they are only doing it for the fame or glory.

I don't believe that Google has to "make the world a better place”, but Google might be using the pledges for the wrong reasons such as publicity, even if Google’s target isn’t for publicity they don’t have to spend money on many charities. I believe that Google’s grants do need to be used, but instead of giving it all to charity organizations they can fund more benefits for their hard working employees. The forth initiative is the best in my opinion because it is helping the earth by developing renewable energy sources, which are cheaper and better for the earth. I believe that Google is trying to be like a saint wandering the streets of Benares, on the banks of the Ganges, because they are trying to take a holy approach to the Indian education for girls ,and in my opinion its seems like Google has so much money, that they don’t know which initiative is more profitable.

i dont think its google's reponsability to make the world a better place but as they said googles founders are willing to pay the money and help out. google is trying to help poverty and most of our world for example they are going to pay 175million dollars wich is alot of money and thats not all they are willing to put some more working with dotorg. they said that google was willing to spend alot of money but i think its going to be a little too much money but overall it is a good idea that google wants to invest in. google is one of the biggest companies in the america and is well know throught the world and the fact that it is known all around the world alot of of people might help in making the world a better plac

When it comes to me, I think that each one of us is responsible of “make the world a better place”, but each one of us is responsible within his/her own capacity . According to the founders they are the ones who want to help the world develop. In my own perspective, with this big amount of money, ($175 million), Google founders can invest it on research for cancer and this way all the world will benefit rather than specific country or population. I'm not saying that what they're trying to do is bad and will harm the world, what I am trying to say is that Google's choices haven't been over thought, also, part of this money can be donated to the Palestinians who are getting their homes bulldozed, or the Iraqis who are still suffering from the war. I'm not saying that Google should donate all their money; I'm just saying that they should at least try building new homes to the Palestinians and the Iraqis. Even though I stated that Google has to over think their choices, their fourth initiative "supports the development of renewable energy sources that are cleaner and cheaper than coal” is one that would help the world in many different ways like saving the ozone layer and people’s money.

Wooksoon JUNG ////////I don't think companies have the responsiblity to make the world a better one. Company isn't for giving philanthropy. They make products, ideas, etc... The organizations for Philanthropy are UN, REDCROSS and UNICEF. I think that the untraditional things are so awsome. In my opinion the untraditional thing is sort of giving hope to people. In this article there were some examples of untraditional philanthropy, such as giving money to a small company. If you give money to a small company, it will hire many people and make them oppurtunities to come out of lower status of earning money. The initiative of giving money to enterneur is the best thing of all. When a small company is given money, it will grow up. So, it will need more people. If they hire more people, they can earn more money. After that company became a big one, it can help another small companies which give jobs to the unemployed.
In this way the countrys' economy will be bigger and bigger. I think the comparsion of the Google people to the saints in India is accurate. Let's take an example.
If there are two countries "A" and "B", a company decided to help a country which got natural diseaster. And B country got some disease epidemic. If the company gives money to A country, A countrys' people will think of the company very positivly, but B countrys' people will think of the company very bad. Because they also got damages.

Organization's like Google should at least have a little say in making the world a better place. They aren't hogging the cash, so they are doing some good for the community. I think the fourth initiative is best because that type of energy won't run out as fast as coal because the sun has a couple of million years longer to live. Well for one there are poor people in the states that would love to have a home with warmth and appliances. They shouldn't think only about other places in the world but America also.

No, i think Google doesn't have the responsibility to make the world a better place. Google helps people but it doesn't really make the world better. There is also yahoo that can also make the world a better place. I really liked what Harriet Rubin said, " we must detect a disease before it becomes pandemic i thought it was really well put to what Google was doing to the world.
In my opinion i think Google is trying to help people but they are a bit illegant.
