We have read articles about the use of handheld devices in the classroom to improve learning. In this week’s article we read about a project that has had a measurable impact on student achievement in math. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.
What kind of a blog would be useful at our school to help students with their subjects? If you were surveyed about the mobile technology that you would prefer to use, which one of those listed in the article would you choose? Would Smartphones be useful in helping students at our school? At what grade level should students begin using them in classes? In which subject areas could they be beneficial? In the project, was it reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities of the Smartphones? In your opinion, what was the best part of this project? What do you think about the reward system as a way to motivate students?

The kind of blog that would be useful at our school to help students with their subject would be informative about how to study and review for tests and quizzes, ways to stay organized, and what to do in class to be able to understand the lessons being told. The mobile technology that I would prefer to use would be the iBook through the usage of Project K-Nect. Smartphones would be useful in helping students at our school. In grade level 7, they should students begin using them in classes because that is when the material they take at school become challenging. In the subject of math, this could be beneficial. It was reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities of the Smartphones. In my opinion, the best part of this project was when they did the study and found out that 90 percent of the students use smart phones in Washington! What I think about the reward system as a way to motivate students great. It motivates all of them, and it creates them to find out the best ways for them to use these software’s, and what to use them on 9which device.)
Probably a video blog, as described in the article, would be most easiest for others to learn because you can listen to it and immediately have an example from the video. I wouldn't be sure about which mobile technology I would use. I would first have to see all the possible choices and compare them to make a choice. I think in our school smartphone could be useful, though ALL functions like SMS, voice call etc. should be disabled. I think the technology should be started using in Algebra 1 class, no matter if it's 8th or 9th grade. I think they could be a benefit in math and science classes only, because those are the only classes where types of equations have to be used. It definitely was a good decision to turn off the text and voice functions on the phone. I suppose the phone that was issued already had a SIM-card issued from the school inserted. So the students could use that card without having to pay, unless they get charged from the school. Including, students could pretend to solve an algebra equation while they are actually texting a friend. Even though the phones are monitored they could try. I think the whole project was very interesting. I learnt a lot and now I at least know one thing for what HTC phones are good for!
A blog where “students can post to request or give help” would be useful at our school to help students with their subjects. If I were surveyed the mobile technology that I would prefer to use, I would use the K-Nect one, and I would try the engineering and science programs. I actually think Smartphones could be useful in helping students. I think students should begin using them in Algebra 1 (whether they will take the course in 8th or 9th grade). I think it can only be beneficial in Math, especially in Algebra. In the project, I think it was reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities because students can easily get distracted. In my opinion, the best parts of the project were the student-created movies with a “CSI” theme the rap song on polynomials. I think the reward system works well as a way to motivate students, especially since this program is receiving much success.
I think that a blog that is for all grades and that people would be able to ask questions to other students of all ages would be helpful at our school. If I got surveyed, I would have also chosen a smart phone over the other technological things listed. I think if we all had smart phones, it would be helpful, because students could use them to get help from other students, and watch videos and get help, whenever they need it, not just in class. I think that if our school got smart phones, and had a program like that, that highschool students should get them, starting in 9th grade. I think that the program would be helpful for all required classes, because everyone has taken, or going to take them, and they could help other students out. I think it is a good idea to disable the text and voice capabilities of the phone, to assure the school that the students don’t use it for social uses. I think the best part of the project is that students can get help from other schools, and that they can get other student’s help whenever they want. I think that the reward system is a great idea, because it motivates students to do well, and to be better then they usually would do. It also makes them put more effort into the work that they do, and try to do it better for them as well.
I don't think a blog whould be any more usefull then some of our teacher's web sites.I whould prefer a smart phone its like a laptop but smaller. I think smart pnones whould be usefull in our school, but think we whould take advatage of it by texting and such. I think middle school whould be the youngest that phones should be used. Yes stoped cids from cheating. the best part about this project is that teahcers can monitor what you are doing to make sure you are doing what you are sopposed to do. I think the Award system is good, I dont think just punishing students works as good as puisment and awards.
A homework-help blog would be useful at school to help students with their homework. If anyone had any trouble with a particular thing, they would post something to say that they didn’t understand, and anyone could answer. It would of course be surveyed and added to by the teachers. I would prefer the HTC smartphone. Smartphones could be useful in helping students at school, starting with 9th grade. They could be beneficial in algebra, or any type of math, as well as science, technology, and engineering. I think it was reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities of the Smartphones, because problems would be caused with these features. In my opinion, the best part of this project was allowing students to further advance in STEM subjects; science, technology, engineering, and math. I think that the rewards method, or the positive reinforcement method, is always good, it is always better to get a prize for good work, than to be reprimanded for bad.

I think our school should have video blogs to help students with their subjects because most students need to visualize rather than reading pages of text. If I was surveyed about which technology I would use mostly likely I would pick between the smartphones or the ipad. Yes smartphones can be very useful in our school only if the features on it was disabled for example SMS texting, cameras, and etc because this would distract the student and wouldnt use it for the right purpose. From my experience since I have Mr. Greer I think the areas that the technology should be used in is math, history, and any AP courses. Yes it was reasonable for the text and voice capabilities of the smartphones to be disabled because the phone is used for educational purpose not for students to text and call their friends. In my opinion the best part of the project is that students can ask questions any time to teachers and other students if they don’t understand, this also help the teacher realize what your having trouble with in the class. I think the reward system is a way to motivate students because this means they would be more into the lesson and everyone is making an effort.
I think Blogspost would be useful at our school to help students with their subjects however, it would be cool to have that be apart of Facebook because students are on it 24/7. If I were surveyed about the mobile technology that I prefer to use in the article, I’d choose the cell phone because its easy, efficient, and always with me. Smartphone’s would be so helpful in our school because students already are wasting a lot of phone credit calling each other all the time for homework. Having a place to go specifically would make life easier, and it would help students learn to do things on their own. I believe at the start of high school, students should be able to use the Smartphone. Math and science would truly be benefited by using the Smartphone because they are the hardest subjects and students usually call students for help or have meetings with teachers under these subjects. It is useful for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities because it forces the students to stay on task and not take advantage of it. It is like a portable help book. In my opinion the best part of this project is trying it out with a lot of students. This could really spark something huge in the educational world. The reward system is good because everyone loves rewards and if the rewards are good enough then students will persevere to achieve them using the Smartphone.
I think video blogs could be helpful to students as it would teach them things that they are not sure of. I would choose the cell phone because it is easy to use and it is easy to carry around. Smartphones would definitely be helpful to students at our school because it would benefit them. I think they should begin using the devices from middle school so the students can become used to it. I think it would help the students in all areas, but the most helpful part would be for math. The fact that the school turned off the text and voice capabilities of the Smartphones can be seen as a good intention to make the students focus on their schoolwork. However, it would be inconvenient at the same time. The best part of this project is that students can get help from many different sources if they are stuck in a math problem as an example. The reward system is an excellent method to motivate your students work harder.
I would say the kind of blog that would be useful at our school would be blogs where you can post question to your teachers, and having a blog for each subject wouldn't hurt. If I was surveyed about the mobile technology that I would prefer to use I would definitely choose Smartphones. I am 100% sure that using Smartphones would be useful in helping students at our school, I would say they should start using them in classes in middle school and above, or maybe 8th grade and above. Smartphones could be beneficial in any subject really, especially sciences, maths, and probably languages. I guess you could say turning off the text and voice capabilities of the Smartphones so that the students wouldn't be distracted, but they could have used the text capabilities to contact teachers. I think the best part of the project would be the fact that you can ask for help at any moment in time, and the fact the students are using Smartphones is interesting enough. I think the reward system is great, because it motivates all the students, everyone loves a reward, so why not use it for learning's sake. -Leen
The most useful blog for our school would be a blog is homework schedule for every class, just in case if someone forgot to write it in their agenda they can just log into their smart phone and check instantly. If I were to choose for a mobile technology I would choose Sony PSP because I don’t really need a Smartphone or help on my homework. If I have a problem (which is rarely) I can just search it up on Google and see how to do it. In my opinion I think Smartphone would be very useful for our school because we have a lot of students who always need help on their homework and when they don’t know how to do it they would just skip it rather then trying to do it, and the most appropriate age would be around 12+ which is around 6th grade. Smartphone would be beneficial to every single subjects including writing. I also found it very reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities of the Smartphone just in case some students cheat on their tests. The best thing about Smartphone is that you can record a video and post it on a blog; it’s almost like having your own personal facebook/youtube account in the palm of your hands. Also the rewarding system is very interesting, it’s almost like the reward system in yahoo answers, this motivate student to help other students more so they can benefit themselves.
That kind of blog would be ok, only if it wasn't required.I would choose the phone too. They could communicate and help each other when doing the homework. From ninth grade and up. Yes it was very smart because they would just be giving cellphones to teenagers. the best part is just getting a smart phone. I dont think it wold motivate me, but it might to others.
I think a blog that would be useful at our school would be how to study for quizzes and tests. It would be extremely useful because many kids are smart but aren’t very good test takers and by studying right they would be able to do well. I think the smart phone is a great way to help students at school especially at algebra as the website has mentioned. I think when students reach high school SmartPhones should be used. They would be beneficial in any class especially in math classes and science classes. No it was not reasonable because if they let the students use it the whole year the students begin to rely on them and then suddenly they take it away during the test. What was the point of it then in the first place? I think the best part of the project would be how you can ask for help at any moment in time from many sources. I think the reward system is a great way to motivate students and it would be really nice if our school began to adapt to this way.

Maybe if the blog was from a trusted University site, then I would go there. I would use an Ipod Touch or an Ipad for the use of Algebra. YESSSSSS SMARTPHONES ARE VERY ACCEPTABLE IN SCHOOL FOR THE USE OF EDUCATION. I think only highschoolers should use them because they are getting ready for college and it would be nice. Algebra and almost every class. English, Writing and other classes which needs internet resources. Yes it is reasonable to turn off their text and call capabilities. I think that the motivation is good because everyday a new technology comes out.
i think a blog for like extra help and information is what we should have it would be useful. i think smartphones are very acceptable it could be very useful. i think not everyone should or very class only some ones, because we need internet in most of those classrooms. i do think its ok to stop ability to call and text at those times. i think its a great way to motivate especially since the program is having a great success.
The blog where students can post to request or give help would be useful at ACS to help students with their subjects, and answer their questions. If you were surveyed about the mobile technology that you would prefer to use, if I were surveyed about the mobile technology that I prefer to use in the article, I’d choose the cell phone because it's easy, simple, and capable. I would also like to have a Smart phone’s but sometimes they get very complicated, and at the same time helpful, in Jordan they take a lot of money for those phones so its not worth having them. Smart phones can be useful in helping students; students should use them in Algebra 1. Its beneficial if you use it to write, calculate, etc. in the project, it was reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities of the Smart phone, so the student not get distracted by messages and calls, while working in school.
The best part of this project is that you can ask for help, and have questions at any time. I think about the reward system as a way to motivate students, it works very well, because it motivates all the students, so all the students will all make an effort, and everyone loves a reward.

There are certainly many sites that are both already in existence and some more yet that could be created for this purpose. One such site for elementary and middle school would be the site set up by the World Math Day Organization. Of all of these listed I don’t really think that realistically speaking I could choose anyone of those many methods listed that would be most beneficial. That is not to say that the choose is impossible to make but rather that it would be very difficult a choice to make in the long run. I think that this new so called “smart phone” would indeed be useful in our school but as is the case with anything there are still quite a few logistical problems. The first and most critical one would be that the school might not be able to afford one smart phone for each student keeping in mind that this would also apply to new students that could enroll at any time of the year. The second such problem would be that of having an internet connection and other such services that would be strong enough and have enough bandwidth that each student could surf the web without unnecessary delays. The last problem would be the most troublesome that being of keeping track of each smart phone. I say this is the most troublesome for the simple reason that there would over the long haul only two ways to go about this in my opinion. Firstly you would have to have a secondary staff tracking each smart phone. Or you have to have a tracking chip in each one that every few seconds or so records it exact position thanks to a Global Positioning Satellite. I would say that in regards to what grade level students how use this would be pretty close to inconsequential. What I mean is that in my opinion the earlier the student is introduced to this smart phone the better. Now there should, of course, be some stipulations. Such as the smart phone should ideally only be given to students who are not liable to abusing it. Also the school would need a promise by the student (or some similar guarantee) that should be student lose track of his or her smart phone that he or she will report this and thereafter commission his or her school for a replacement. Lastly there are many ways in which such a device would be many. One such benefit would be that this would be a way of increasing the responsibility of those entrusted with this unique privilege.
A blog that helps students with their studying and homework would be a helpful blog to the school. If I was surveyed, I would choose the smart phone. It would be so much helpful for students because it saves them much more time than doing the homework without it. In my opinion, I think that smart phones should be used starting from middle school. The smart phones would be beneficial in math and science. I think that it is reasonable for the school to turn off the text and voice capabilities of the Smart phones. I think that the best part of the project is that it has been enabled for students to get help from other students from other schools. I think that the reward system is a great idea, because it makes students do better work than they usually do in their assignments.
