Wii Warriors, Wii Wounds

Computer games are fun. People often will become so involved that they can play a game for hours. This week’s article looks at the popular Wii system and some of the implications that using it can have on a person’s physical health. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that shows you have read the article, expresses your views, and addresses my questions.

If you are not familiar with the Wii system and how it works, do some research to familiarize yourself with it so that you can address my questions. Which of the Wii games do you think would be most likely to cause an injury and why? In the article, Dr. Halpern said that he treated two types of injuries. Which type would you be likely to sustain? Have you ever injured yourself while playing a computer game? What happened and how long did it take to recover? What advice would you give to adults who are considering playing games on a Wii?

Personally, the Wii games that I think would be most likely to cause an injury are extremely competitive and athletic games, like boxing, bowling and tennis. Even though such games should be played with the right amount of force, as if a person was in the real game, many people begin to get lazy and “cheat” their way through these games by using easy moves. Just like Dr. Halpern pointed out, “a common problem is the realization by players that a full swing is not required; a flick of the wrist is often enough to return a serve or bowl a strike.” Such realizations lead people that are playing such games as tennis and bowling to get muscle strains and swelling since they are usually not used to using such moves in games in real life. The type of injury that I would be likely to sustain is repetitive stress problems, as when I get focused and competitive in a game and enjoy it at the same time, I find myself playing it for hours at a time with no breaks and I simply keep on moving from one game to another until I get bored, which takes a couple of hours to happen. During the winter break last year, my brother and I were playing on the Wii and he told me that I did not need to use full force when it came to my moves and that I could simply flick my wrist for most of the moves in games, like tennis and bowling. When I did this at first, I did not feel anything, but when I kept on doing this, my hand started to hurt me, especially when I would bend it back and fourth. Fortunately, my hand took only a few days to recover and after that, I started playing games on the Wii by using full force as if I was in the real game to prevent myself from getting injured in the future. As for adults that are considering playing games on a Wii, I would advise them to not do any moves that they have never done in their lives before, which will prevent them from experiencing pain as a result of overloading themselves. Lastly, I would advise them to take it easy and not play repeatedly for long amounts of time so they do not experience stress problems.

max- 1 hour of video games a day, or set up a personal system where for every two minutes of television or video games that you use, you do one minute off completely non-screen activity, even if it is homework. I was always told, even though it's not true, that your eyes will get messed up if you watch to much screens. ( as i am doing while I write this) i once played on a friends wii and they also introduced me to the lazy ways to play the games, such as wii tennis, all I needed to do, she explained, was to flick my wrist and stretch my arm to the sprites position on the screen. I think that for adults, the last phrase, it's good to remember your not a kid, is very correct because many adults do overstress themselves playing video games. Another thing that is true, is that children now have such short attention spans, like me i get distracted so quickly from doing homework when i need to, it's just harder for me to concentrate on one thing for a long time than it is for say, my father who is from a different generation. i think that the sports games, which can cause competition amongst people, are the ones that are most likely to hurt somebody because they will go through any means possible to win, like wrist flicking. I would likely sustain an injury a traumatic injury where i twisted an ankle or something, since I've been getting lots of those recently and I am pretty resistant to strains. I have had injuries while playing video games, but just head aches or eye sores. Nothing that couldn't be cured with fresh air. (except migraines that are really painful and last for about 11 hours and I'm dehydrated). I would advise that if they wanted to get fit, such as people who are using wii fit, that they sell the wii, or not buy it at all and instead use the money to hire a personal trainer for a few months, because really, you can get a lot more out of that and it will be under the careful observation of a trained professional, and if it is not for wii fit, or anything like that, then to take it easy and not play more than 4 hours a week.

I think that the Wii Sports Baseball would cause the most injuries because of the strain on the muscles when swinging the 'bat.' All the force that's used going into the swing isn't released onto another object, sot eh swing continues, pulling the lower shoulder muscles. I'd probably sustain traumatic injuries because I don't play video games that long, so I wouldn’t be at too big a risk for repetitive stress issues. I can't say that I ever have injured myself while playing a computer game. I think that would be the point of a computer; to have fun while not putting any real stress on your body. Playing a computer game excessively is for people (kids in particular) that are too lazy to go and do something good for their health. I'd tell them to stretch before playing the video game console and its games (it's the most backwards advice).

In my opinion, the Wii game that would be the most dangerous would have to be boxing. Why? Well, you're moving so fast and you're not letting out the energy on anything; it's just into air. So I think that that one could possibly be bad for your muscles but also cause of how fast you're moving and how hard you "punch" you can punch something in front of you, accidently. But also, that you're putting so much effort in then not really releasing it, I think that could cause potential damage. I would be likely to sustain a twisted ankle, honestly. I'm really clumsy. Plus, I don't leave much space in my room for anything; I cram everything! So, I'd probably hit something and twist my ankle. No, I have never injured myself because of a computer game, honestly, I'm not one to really get into a video/computer game. When I do play Wii, I really suck. So, because I suck so much, my moves aren't that great and I don't do much. So, I have never injured myself through playing a computer game. But if I did, I would definitely stop playing; it's really sad, honestly. I think that adults playing Wii should take it easy because well, adults are fragile! They make a wrong movement, and oh- their back's in pain. I think they should take it easy, play something like bowling. Or really, just avoiding playing games to remain on the healthier side. :)

Unlike my colleagues, I actually have a Wii, so I can speak from personal experience. The Wii Games that I think would be likely to cause an injury would be Wii Sports Boxing, as I have injured myself while playing it. It requires very quick, accurate maneuvers, which may be difficult to consistently do to correctly in the heat of the midst of the game. Also, any real sports game, Like Madden 08, which also require quick, sudden movements and hand-eye coordination, are games that I would consider likely to cause injuries, as they, along with Wii sports Boxing, require frantic movements in all directions, so they are likely to cause an injury. The type of injury that was mentioned that I feel I am more likely to sustain is repetitive stress problems, from playing too long. This is because I play videogames quite a lot, and when I do play, which is often, it is usually for long periods of time. That is the type of injury I would be more likely to get. I am very embarrassed to say that I have indeed injured myself when playing a video-game, and as I mentioned earlier, it was while playing Wii Sports Boxing. I was over at a friend’s house, and he was introducing me to video-games by showing me his Wii, which was brand new. He offered up the dual controllers, and set up a game of Wii Sports Boxing. Within seconds, I was frantically waggling the controllers, as well as jabbing and thrusting them forward. Then, when going for the finishing jab, I tripped forward, fell to the ground, and the remote had flown out of my hand, and cracked against the wall. I immediately stood up, despite my aching injuries to my back and arms, and apologized numerous times for the broken controller. That's what happened, and, since the injury was just a few bruises, it took the rest of the day to recover, which is not long. Finally, my advice for adults who are considering playing games on the Wii is to be cautious. By all means still have fun, as that's what the system was intended for. But don't overreact, flailing about everywhere while playing. Remember that not every little game requires wild motions, as those will hurt you. Have fun but be aware of your surroundings, and be cautious and careful while playing, and that can lead to a fun, safe experience for both adults and kids.

I think that the game that would cause injury would definitely be the sport games like running, baseball, tennis, bowling… (etc.) I think that these games would cause injury because when you are playing these games, you are trying so hard to swing the bat in baseball and when you do that you might slam your hands at the wall or at the lamb or any object that is near you when you play. When you are playing tennis, you might hit the light bulb from above you and it might fall on your head and really get injured. Another reason is that when you are swinging at any game, you might strain your muscles from your arm or anywhere you use your body which would be from playing the Wii a lot. The type of injury that I would most likely to sustain is spraining my ankles, because when you twist your knees, you can’t walk anymore and when you sprain your ankles you can still walk but barely. I had also sprained my muscles, around my shoulders, when I was playing the Wii at my cousin’s house, because I was playing a bowling game and I tried so hard and played for so long. After this happened, my shoulder kept on hurting for about a couple of days but I finally recovered and I was back to normal. The advice that I would give to adults who are considering on playing games on a Wii Is that they shouldn’t play like it’s an actual sport, they should play with patience and not try so hard or they might strain their arm or their legs. Another advice I would also give the adults is that before you start playing the Wii you should spread every object that might cause destruction, which would be close to you.

I think that the baseball game would cause the most injuries; this is because I know from experience. I think it is this one because people always tend to swing with the most power that they have and they end up spraining there arm muscles. I think that I would probably most likely sprain my arm muscles because I tend to do that a lot. (Stretching is very important.) I only hurt myself playing baseball on a Wii and I’ve never touched it since then. As soon as I felt pain I put an ice pack on my bicep because it hurt the most. I took me 3 days to recover. I only have one thing to say to adults, if you are not athletic, don’t play the Wii. And if you really want to play, stretch for about 15 minutes so your muscles don’t get hurt.

I think that the Wii sport- boxing would cause the most injuries. It's not because it is a violent sport, but instead it is because you put force to punch, but the force stays in your hands. For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction, and so when you punch the air, the force will stay in your hands, which will hurt you just as much as the punch would have hurt the target. I would probably get a traumatic injury because I don’t play Wii a lot. My brother bought it and I tried it a few times, and so I never really put my mind into winning or anything like that. I have never injured myself while playing a video game because I don’t really play video games. I mostly waste my time on computer stuff rather than play video games. I advise adults to take it easy and go find something more relaxing. But if they do try playing it, they should really conceder not putting any real stress on the swing or punch or what ever they are doing.

Honestly, all of them. Ping pong, boxing, tennis, anything. Because you’re playing on air so your moves can be fast and you don’t concentrate on anything but the game. The injuries I would be more likely to sustain is repetitive stress problems. Hrm no I have never injured myself playing a computer game, and I don’t really see how you could. I wouldn’t give them any advice, except for "don't do it". I find video games pretty much pathetic, and a big waste of time, and if they want to waste their time on something like that, oh well I really couldn't care less.

Many people like to play games, now a days there are so many consoles to choos from. Many people get so "into" the game that they start swinging the controller around. Many people deal with intense games in their own way, for me I start talking to my self. But now the Wii has offered more to the intense gamer. Now when playing the Wii games the characters movements are your movements. The Wii offeres full body movement, and wireless controllers. The Wii comes with a few games already in it like tennis and boxing. These games are most likely to cause damage to the shoulder. My friend once came back from a game and said his whole right side of his back to his shoulder was in pain, I asked what he did and said "I played the Wii!" but if I were to get an injury I would choose the leg injury, because I don't run much to begin with. I would definatly worn the 40 year olds who would like to play the Wii because its a jot of joint movement, I suggest that they stretch out befor they play the game. So many people have the Wii and so many different studies have been shown, but if being full on in a game means dislocating your shoulder count me in!

In my opinion, bowling would be most likely to cause and injury because you have to stretch your hand all the way back then pull it forward, I got injured because of that and it hurt for days, I thought I had broke my hand, but it wasn’t that serious, it was just a simple strain in my left hand muscle. I would most probably sustain a twisted injury because when I play video games that long I tend to move a lot, especially while playing the wii. My eyes tart to hurt when I play computer games because of the screen keeps lighting. I had to test out my eyes and the result was ok, but the doctor told me that if I play computer games a lot it would result in glasses. My only advice would be not to play games, especially not the wii, it’s boring and hurts while playing.

i think that baseball would cause the most injuries because of the swinging motion, it can do straining to you arms and maybe hips. i have never had injures because of a game and a advice to old people is that they need to stretch before playing.

I think that tennis would cause more injuries than the other wii games, because it needs a fast swinging motion and you need to run for the ball so you may strangle your ankle. Doctor Halpern said that he treated 2 types of injuries and one of them is concerned with the knees, so I think that knee injuries would stay for along time because I tried knee injuries and they stay for a long time. I have never injuries myself while playing a computer game, and if t get hurt from a computer game is if I stay sitting for along time. The advice that I would give for Wii players is that you need to take a break and not get really into it and start acting like it’s a real game that you are playing, I think that it can get really competitive at times.

I think that the Wii sport would cause injuries because if you hit someone. I had never injured myself. I would advise them to wear the strap on their hands so they won't injure each other.
