Would it be appropriate to have laws that forbid using a cellphone while driving?
Cellphone Vigilantes Article

I rarely find myself in situations in which someone uses their cell phone in a manner that disturbs others. However if the situation does occur, I usually wait until the person is done with their conversation. However, if our conversation is important, I tell them to turn off the phone. I have never used my cell phone in a way that disturbs others, and if I receive a call when I am not in a position to receive one, I reject the call. A Solution that I suggest for dealing with this problem is introducing a special cell-phone corner. The cell-phone corner is similar to the idea of a smoking corner, so when you need to make a call, you just walk over to that corner and make your call freely. I believe it would be very appropriate to have laws that forbid driving with a cell-phone.
I have never been in a scenario in which a conversation I was in was interrupted by a cell-phone call. However I believe a law that bans using a cell-phone and driving at the same time is very appropriate. The reasons are that, first of all in Jordan, many of the accidents that occur are blamed on people who were talking on their cell-phones while driving. What is ironic is that in Jordan, there is in fact a law that bans using cell-phones while driving but it is rarely enforced. Also I have been in many cases where the person I was driving with nearly collided with another car because the person in the other car was driving recklessly because of their cell-phone.
Reading the article, I felt disrupted. If someone cuts my cell phone signals, I would get very mad and go up to the person and hit the. As annoying it is when someone talks on the phone when they are not supposed to, it is more annoying to get your cell phone signal jammed. I believe that cell phones are an essential key to the life of many people in the world. In Jordan we rarely see people being disrupted by calls because their phones are usually on silent. Also instead of calling people message a lot. For each message in Jordan it costs 3 piaster’s, and for each minute in a call it costs 3 piaster’s. We tend to message more because it more enjoyable and the conversations don’t die out as fast as it would when you are talking on the phone. I never felt interrupted when a cell rings. It is a common thing as if needing to use the bathroom. There is nothing wrong with it. I believe that the solution is already there. Just ignore them. Someone’s on the phone, it’s not a big deal. I think people who are annoyed by cell phones ringing and answering them are old fashioned and are in the past.
In Jordan if someone uses this device in a public area, everyone would want to kill him. People depend on cell phones these days. I cannot blame them. Cell phones should be allowed to be used when driving in the states and Canada. In Jordan if people use cell phones while they are driving we’d have triple the accidents we have today. I believe that laws forbidding people jamming frequencies because they are annoyed is very inappropriate and rude. Fines over 10,000 dollars are a good way to stop this annoying and disturbing act.
I find myself in this situation about once a month which is not very much, and that is why I think that these jammers should be illegal, but in jail. I also agreed with who said that what happens if there is an emergency and these jammers are blocking the signal so you can't call. There are many reasons that these jammers aren't good and they are better than the reasons of them being good.
To be honest, I think that people who use jammers and think that people who talk on the phone are annoying are actually the annoying ones. I mean just because you don’t get any phone calls, you shouldn't mess up other people's lives. And like before they are bad in emergency cases because what if a couple are out to see a movie and they left their children at home, then the house goes on fire and the kids go out but can't call their parents because of the jammers. To this end, I think that having these jammers is something dumb and useless, that they should only be used in jail.
This article was very interesting. It presented the difficulties people have with the use of cell phones in public when jammers are used to stop conversations between users. The jammers, small devices, send out high radio signals that cause cell phones to overwhelm and lose connection with the cell towers. These devices are illegal in the United States of America and its use is punishable by law. In few cases, jammers could be used after getting the appropriate permissions. Some are used in jails, to make sure prisoners are not using cell phones. Others are used in restaurants to enforce the rule of no cell phones on employees. Occasionally they are used in group therapy sessions and church masses. Illegal sell of jammers is punished by law where the violators are fined up to eleven thousand dollars. When the sellers are caught, the FCC tries to the buyers. Others are fighting for their privilege to use these devices in places like jails, were rules banning cell phones should be enforced.
During family occasions in public places, customers using their cell phones are usually loud and disruptive. Few discuss business, provide feedback and give instruction over the cell phone. This is annoying and nerve wrecking for the people who are in the vicinity. This type of behavior is also seen in malls, movie theaters, hospitals, and many other public areas or buildings. I personally feel uncomfortable when I hear the conversations others are having around me. Sometimes, I feel empathy with them as I hear their problems, aches and sorrows. To be honest, sometimes, I am angered to such behavior. These people with their loud voice act like they own that particular place. Personally, I do not react in any way. I only sit in my seat and leave them to their business. When I normally use the cell phone, I talk in a calm voice so I so not disturb the people around me. In my opinion, jammers should not be used frequently in public areas and buildings. People should be educated on the use of cell phones in public. In fact, we should be able as human beings to give feedback to each others when things are not right. Waiters, customers, employees should feel comfortable to ask the disruptive person to lower his voice or exit the area, until he complete his conversation. Laws that forbid the usage of cell phones during driving are enforced in most of the countries of the world. This law is essential in keeping the car drivers, passenger and other people safe.
Well, I don't think I find myself a lot in those situations, especially not situations that will cause me to use phone jammers. I guess I don't mind it as much as other people do. When it happens, I will maybe move around so they wouldn’t disturb me. Or if it isn’t that bad then I wouldn't mind that much. I never use cell phones in a manner that disturbs others. I think it is just a minor problem, I don’t know why people make a big deal out of it. Just be patient and deal with having a person beside you talk in a loud voice, and if you really can't then move around so you wouldn’t hear them. In other cases you can just ask the person politely to lower their voices. It would be very appropriate to have laws that forbid using cell phones while driving. I have actually heard of many countries that applies that as a law.
I don't think that this is a big problem, and people who are using those jammers have to pay a lot of money as a first warning. I think it is a good idea to use thos jammers in jails as some people suggested. That way the government would not have to worry about phones being used in jails. I think a law banning the cell phones while driving is a very good law and it should be enforced strictly. Talking on the cell phone is a main cause of many of the car accidents that take place. Talking on the phone just distracts you form concentrating on the street.
I think that the opinions of the people in this article are totally fair, I mean how annoying can it get you have to hear this person talk and talk. On the other hand if these jamming devices were allowed people will start to abuse their privilege. Instead of using the device once or twice they might they will most probably use it whenever they have the chance to or whenever they see someone with a cell phone. As said in the article that what if it was an emergency and somebody used the jamming device, I think that it would be considered a crime.
Like many others I find myself in this situation many times, mostly this situation occurs on the bus. After a long and hard day at school it is not pleasant to hear someone’s conversation for half hour. When I find my self in this situation when people just keep on talking and talking on their cell phone most of the time I just take out my ipod and listen to some music. Well since calling here in Jordan am so expensive I just text message most of the time unless I'm really tried or it’s an emergency, and I think that doesn’t bother anyone. There is no solution available for this it is like saying I don’t like how this guy looks; you can’t change it you will just have to deal with it. I think there should be no laws on talking on your cell phone while you’re driving, it might be dangerous but most of the time people will say call back.
I think that whoever uses or is using these cell phone jammers, are not people that only should be find, but also people who should be put on death rope too, because maybe others have a similar like “death rope” emergency and they have to make an emergency call. This act is totally Unconstitutional. I don’t usually find my self exposed to people who have actions like this going on, only once, when I was with a friend, and he tried to call and message this girl, he like her looks but he does not know. With that I usually react normally because he get’s calls from others shouting at him, or If not I just ask him/she to stop. Till this point I have never used my phone in a polite or impolite manner that would by any means disturb others. For me if I have such a problem with a call requires disturbing others, I would simply close my phone, or move away from the public, or crowded areas. For other I say you should have better manner’s and think about others before you only think about yourself, because it is totally un-polite. Or just close off your phone. I don’t usually mind if I am calling someone when I am driving, I know I don’t have the silence but we have the farm, so I know, it usually isn’t a problem when there is silence in movement inform off u, in this case even seat belts are not necessary, but in public places,, which I don’t have experience in I think the law about driving and now phones should be strictly imposed to the citizens and foreigners of our country.
Usually people who talk on their phones out loud in public don’t annoy me at all. In fact it’s the complete opposite; I usually listen to their conversations for fun and play different games with my friends to guess who the person is on the other line! However, sometimes when I am talking about something really important to someone, I wouldn’t like people all around me talking on their phones in a really loud voice. That would just distract and really annoy me. Usually, when I am on the phone in public, I don’t think I disturb anyone (I hope!) I don't talk about anything important in public because I’m scared that people listen in on my conversations. I would just use my phone to make sure I have a ride, and to ask where people are. I think that to solve this problem you could maybe just move your spot if everyone around you is talking on the phone or you can talk on the phone in a really loud voice and make THEM annoyed so that they would stop!! hehe. I think that a law forbidding driving while using the phone is a very smart idea, especially in Jordan. People drive bad enough here, and with cell phones, that would just make chaos.
In my opinion I think that if people aren't talking too loud on their cell phones then it shouldn’t be a problem, but if someone is screaming in the middle of a cafe or restaurant, then I think that the owner would have the right to ask them to lower their voice, and if that didn’t work he should be able to kick her/him out. The devise that disconnects all signals though, I think is a violation of people’s rights. No one should be allowed to just make people stop talking whenever he/she wants them to. What if a person was talking to someone really important or an emergency was occurring, then the person who disconnected the lines could be the reason for someone’s death! So in my opinion I don’t think the devise to move all signals should be legal ANYWHERE in the world!
Usually I find my self in these annoying situations at least once every day. When such a thing happens, I simply ignore it and wait for them to finish it. I think I disturb people more than I get disturbed. Getting at least 7-8 phone calls an hour.
Before, I used to answer and ask who ever I was talking to to wait a moment. Now I ignore calls or give them a busy tone.
It's very appropriate to have laws that forbid using a cellphone while driving. It's equivalent to drinking and driving, or sleeping. You just loose the focus you need while driving.
I don’t really care what people say on their cell phones and I don’t pay attention to it anyway. It’s their business and not mine. I wouldn’t like people complaining about my calls either. I don’t find myself in situations where people use their cell phones in a manner that disturbs me a lot anyways. I hope I don’t use my cell phone in a way that it disturbs others if I do I can’t help it.
I think that somebody could create a cell phone where only the person on the other end of the call can hear you and opposite. This would be perfect for privacy and for people who don’t use their cell phone like others like it. There already are laws that you can only use a cell phone with earphone while driving but I don’t think you should totally ban it. Some people get very important call that they have to answer.
I don't think I have ever frequently been in any situation where others are having a conversation that really irritated me. Maybe once, I remember an old women had this really annoying accent and was screaming on the phone! I wished then that I had a jammer. But I don’t think anybody has the right to use the jammer in a public place and disconnect all the connections. If someone is having an important emergency and they could have called the police to solve their problem, the people who use the jammers might of coast someone their life. I'm sure I have used my cellphone in a way that disturbed others, maybe if I got a surprising call that got me excited I would talk really loud and probably others would want to slap my phone away. But they should get over it, its not like its happening every second. You can just be calm for that time and it will be over. Bring ear plugs with you while your at it, its not that big of a deal! But, it would be kind of fun to try it at least just once to see the faces of the people. But I would probably feel guilty. A cellphone while driving is a different story for me, I mean some people might get distracted and lose track of the streets. There are some countries that forbid that, like over here in Jordan. But still the jammers should not be used, just incase of an accident someone can call, if there’s no police or people around.
