Student safety is important. This week we will look at how schools are changing the way that they react to crisis situations and how technology is being used to alert people. Go to the link below and read the article. Then write a reflective comment about the topic.
Were you aware of the incidents reported in the article? Does our school have a text messaging system for emergencies? Should it and if so, who should be contacted through the system? How should students be involved? Under what circumstances should such a system be used?

I think that this system is a perfect system for all use not just campus but for anything. I mean almost all of us have cell phones and there on silent during class time but if some one try’s to call you or send you a message you would feel the phone vibrating in your pocket. I heard all of the incidents mentioned in the article especially the one about the Virgina tech. That was big news and I probably think that it is known worldwide. Our school at A.C.S does not have a texting emergencies system, thought I don’t thin we would need it because we are a small school and there is the intercom in every class room.
If it had it think it should be the same system described on the article because the system they used seemed to be very effective. I think a students should not be involved because I think that there would to much panic some students may even start to cry and this would put the gunman nervous and he would start shooting every one. Well the system should only be used during emergencies such as a fire or even a possible threat in school. Sometimes it would be okay for use of news and to see whats going on.
Well I thought the messaging idea was a cool and great idea. Almost everyone has a phone. 100% of our Computer Literacy class does. I also know for a fact in the middle of class messages are sent, people call you, but teachers just dont hear it because it is on vibrating or silent. So when a warning message is sent, most of the class would know before the next period starts. Sending messages in my opinion is a great idea. Everyone would know about the in 1-2 hours. Also messaging is good because I think when everyone in school receives a message at the time is a sign of something not good. I was never aware of the message sending idea universities use, until I read this article. I also I was only aware of the Virginia Tech incident and not any of the others.
I believe that our school doesnt have this idea of text messaging students. Our school doesnt even support using phones in Campus during school hours so why would sending a message during school hours be effective in our situation. We have different ways of communication between students, parents, and teachers. Our ways with students is by using the bell, school intercoms, and by the teacher announcing it or by sending an email to the students. The teachers communicate by their personal intercoms, phones, and sending emails. Our school contacts our parents by calling them in work or home, by sending the parents emails or talking to them if they are in school. I believe our school should not have a text messaging system for students. If a student receives a message in class they might say, Its turned on in case of an emergency in school. In my opinion, parents should be contacted by messaging too. In our trip last year to Wadi Rum the teachers sent text messages to parents to tell them we were ok. In universities this system should be used. Not all classes happen at the same time so it would be effective.
About the incidents in the article, I was not aware of them at all and do not remember seeing any of the incidents on the news. Our school actually has recently acquired a system in which they text message parents in case of emergencies. The people who should be (and are) contacted through this system are the parents because they are the people who usually control their children’s schedules and they should be aware if their children are in trouble or if there’s no school on a particular day because of something unexpected that has occurred. The way students should be involved in the system is by a system by which if a student requests a text-message be sent to him/her beforehand, s/he will get one. Another way that a student could be involved is by his/her parent informing him/her about the message the parent just received. There are many circumstances under which this system could be used. The system should be used if there’s an intruder on school grounds or there is some sort of terrorist threat. Another way is if there is a school trip and cell phones are prohibited, the school would text message the students’ parents to inform them that their children have arrived safely at their destination. The final way that this could be used is that if there is a snow-day and the school has shut down or if students are sent home early because of a blizzard or heavy rainfall, or something of the sort the parents would be informed beforehand.
I believe this system is a great idea and has many advantages. First of all if there is some sort of threat on campus then the school can warn the students not to come to school before they arrive. If there is a snow day and the school has shut down, then the parents can just look at the messages on their cell-phones and tell their children to go back to sleep. So far, I really cannot see a flaw in this system, and as I’ve just read from the article we are doing this blog on, the system has worked successfully.
The incidents in this article, I was not aware of at all. At ACS they actually have recently acquired a system in which we text message parents in case of emergencies (only). In order for that to happen, you must ask the principle if he will allow you to contact your guardian. The people who should be contacted through this system are the legal guardians of the children because they are the people who usually take care or fix their children’s problems when they're in time of need. They should be aware if their children are in trouble or if there’s a problem like this particular day happens to be a half day and you need a ride home. I believe our school should not have a text messaging system for students. If a student receives a message in class they might lie and claim that it's turned on in case of an emergency or something; and might distract others by messages as well as causing temptation for other students to play with their cell phones. In my opinion, parents should keep on being contacted by email. On the other hand there are many circumstances under which this system could be used. The system should be used if there’s an intruder on school grounds; like the Virginia tech or if there is some sort of dangerous threat. Another way is if there is a school trip and cell phones are forbidden, the school would text message the students’ parents to inform them that their children have arrived safely and are feeling well. The final way that this could be used is that if there is a climate problem and the school has decided to close and students are sent home early, the parents would be informed beforehand.
This article was very interesting and opened my eyes toward these situations. This article talked about the use of text messaging, emails, and ads to warn students and teachers about emergencies that are presently occurring in their school or college. When a student with a rifle, was trying to harm the students, text messages were sent to students, telling them to stay in the classes, until everything is clear. One incident occurred in Virginia Tech. One student killed 32 other students and many others were wounded. Text messaging was not used, so many students evacuated there classes and were wounded by the shots. Today, many colleges are posting ads on Facebook and are emailing the students during emergencies. This is saving many of the lives of the students in colleges and schools.
About a year ago, the Virginia Tech. incident occurred. I was notified about this a day later. Personally, I was stunned and confused. There was no way of warning the many students, in time. Many were injured and 32 were shot and killed. I sat there that night, and thought to myself, if there could have been a way to warn the students in time. Reading this article, my question was answered. The use of text messaging and emails would have saved all the students. I believe our school does own a text messaging system. Our school uses it for various situations. It is used to notify parents about their children’s condition during traveling. We also use it to notify families about special events that are going to be held by the school. Due to the fact, there are no emergencies in our school, I do not know if it used in emergency situations. In our school, most messages are sent to our parents. Most of the time, the parents are the first to be notified. In my opinion, the students should be notified, first, because they are the ones in danger. Due to the fact our school has a small amount of students, we are notified by intercoms. I believe this procedure is named the Safe Haven drill. Students should always be notified and should always be hidden in the many rooms of the school. In my opinion, text messaging by the school should only be used for emergencies and should be used to notify parents about their children. To repeatedly receive information from the school on events is a nuisance. In conclusion, I believe our school is ready to face any emergency, because of the systems and procedures we have decided to be taken, during emergencies.
I wasn't aware of all the incidents but I have heard about the Virginia Tech that took place last year. I saw it on the news, and honestly I was shocked. I kept thinking to myself, how could this happen? Why didn’t the police come? Why didn’t all the students know? To my knowledge, our school has a system that sends e-mails to parents. For example when we have a snow day, all our parents get notified and know that we are coming home early. I think there is another system in our school that sends text messages to parents, but I am not really sure about that. Our school should definitely have a text messaging system, like the one that was used in the article. I think a good system would be to send a text message to students and to parents at the same time. Parents are important people to be notified, after all us the students are their responsibility. The first priority is that the students get notified if anything happens on the campus, because after all they are the people who are going to get affected. The text messaging system should be used if an intruder got on the campus of the school. That is the most important need for this system.
In my opinion this system is very useful. I mean in the incident that happened in the article students quickly got notified and they were alarmed. Unfortunately, I don’t think this system is going to work in our school since cell phones are prohibited in our school. Therefore it will be useless to send messages if the students can't check them. I think our school should consider using this system, especially since it always tries to protect us in the most ways possible. This system would be very useful but only if students are allowed to use cellphones
The incidents in the article actually surprised me. I had never heard of the shootouts that occurred in the universities except for the Virginia Tech. shootout. I was extremely surprised that none of the students were informed of the first few shootouts and actually continued their classes! At our school, I don’t think that there is a text messaging system. I don’t know this for a fact, but I do know that my parents have never received any text messages about anything going on at school. I do think that the school should have a text messaging system that quickly informs students during emergencies. The school should inform the students and not the parents, though. This is because if the school informs the parents, then what are the parents going to do? They are just simply going to text message their child to see if they are ok. So to save time, the school could just text message the students before the parents. When students get the text message then they would know how to react to that particular situation because she/he would have been told what to do. But the text messaging system should not be over used at all. It should be restricted only for emergencies, and not reminders. If the school starts using it as reminders then the students would not take it seriously and would not immediately look at their message like they should in an emergency.
In my opinion the text messaging system is very useful and appropriate. Just like the article said, it has been working for many schools and colleges, and has not failed yet. In our school though, I don’t think that it is ever going to be used. First of all, our school tells us that we have to have our phones off at all times. When this is the case many people decide not to bring their phones, and then the text messaging system would be useless. But if our school allows us to have our phones at least on vibrate, then we can use the text messaging program during emergencies and it would be a fast way to warn everyone if an emergency occurs. It is actually a better idea than our P.A. systems because then the intruder would not hear what the school says we should do
Wow, there are a lot of terrorists in this world. This school does have a text messaging system. The text messaging system in A.C.S is only for parents and teachers. I think that students should also be allowed to use the text messaging system, because what would the students do if all the teachers were killed. They won't be able to survive. I also think that this school should allow students to use their phones.
I think students should be allowed to use their phones, in case an emergency happens. They should be able to use face book too. We should be able to use face book because then we could use face book as an emergency announcement way. I think we should be able to use MSN too so we could communicate with each other and warn each other.

I was not aware of the things happening around the world. It is amazing that there are mass killers coming to schools. Our school has a kind of text messaging system. I do not know how it works though. I think they should check that everybody has a cell phone number and try if it works. I think the school should have everybody’s number and that they would be correct. There should always be a finished text message there which you would just have to click to send to everyone.
Students should be allowed to have their cell phones on in school but not on ring but on vibrate mode. We have to be ready for everything. We do not want to risk the lives of so many innocent kids. Students are required to have their phone charged everyday and for those students not owning a phone should be lent some from the school.
I was aware of the shooting at Saint Johns University, and was glad that the university had implanted new safety procedures after the Virginia Tech incident. Our school does have a text messaging system that is used incase of emergencies or during school trips.
I believe parents both the mother and father, the teachers and the students should be involved with the system. The teachers should know, so they can follow procedures, the parents should know about the situation their kids are in and the students should know what dangers lie ahead. And incase the teacher incompetent at the time, the students could follow some sort of procedure.
Students should be taught how to re act according to school policy if there is some sort of emergency, maybe a code of some sort. This sort of system could be used for simple things such as snow days and emergencies such as a terrorist attack.

I wasn’t aware of any of those incidents that happened on those schools, I think that is a good thing because the Unwanted man inside would not be notified of an “emergency”
Our school dose have an emergency text system, but messages do not get sent to students. Only to parents. I think that is a bad way to do text massaging for emergency, because, students are the ones who should hide from the terrorists not the parents. But what contradicts that thought of them getting sent to students is that the school does not allow cellophanes in the school. The students should be involved in this by allowed cell phones, and sending emergency messages. By Yousef
