Teens Take Tech to Class

Middle and high school students are increasingly relying on technology, including laptops, flash drives and all-in-one printers. That has many administrators struggling to keep their school policies up to date. Our article this week looks at students in one part of the U.S. to see how students have embraced technology in their lives. Go to the link below and read the article. Write a reflective comment that expresses your opinion and addresses my questions.

As you read about the students in the article, do you think that they are typical? What would you expect the average student at our school to have? How do local prices compare with other countries in considering the cost of these devices? Does the price affect people’s decisions to purchase technological tools? Which of the things described do you think would be useful for students? Which are not needed? Which do you think you will need to purchase when you go to college? Which should we require students to have now?

I think these kids are typical students. I expect that everyone has a computer at home they can use if not their own. Most people have ipods or other things such as mp3s. About 90% of the school has a cell phone and i think all of them have a thumb drive. The prices are pretty much the smae everywhere, although im sure there are countries that are less or more expensive than this one. I think the price doesnt count to much if the buying of the electronical device is really necessary and the family can afford it. Of course if it costs too much they will not buy it but in Germany and im sure some place else you can get a decent laptop for 399 euros.

I think a computer is the most useful device a student can have. t provides internet and with that lots of good research tools for school. It has microsoft word and powerpoint to type things up and/or make a slideshow for a class you have. Thumb drives are necessary in todays school life since 80% of the work you do is completed on the computer. Cellphones are also needed for school if you believe it or not, but with it you can call a friend to help you with work anywhere any time. When you go to college you will need a computer, a thumb drive, a cell phone, and if you work better with it a ipod/mp3. For school now a thumb drive and a computer are needed most but almost everybody has other electronic devices.

I think that people should always be using computers from now on. Life becomes a lot easier. You would only have to carry a laptop and not 50 heavy textbooks. You would also be a lot more organized and not have papers all over the place.

Your life would be a lot easier for only 700$. And it’s the same price as notebooks, because notebooks finish. But laptops can be erased and take up A LOT more memory than the notebook. So technology life is the best.

I think the teens in the article very typical/ average student. Now days my colleges and friends have all or some of these cell phone, laptop and mp3 players (ipod). It very typical to have these items because we think it is essential for us. I can’t imagine a kid, 13years –above, without a mobile. But the flash drive now that is essential, there are a lot of projects for example power points that teachers ask you to do at home and bring it in a flash drive to show the class. A student without a flash drive will have a very hard time a t school with his homework and other projects. A typical student at our school would have a computer or a mobile some might have mp3 players but not all.

The prices may very in every country. In my country Bolivia there is a lot of computer factories for example dell and others. So it coast a lot cheaper if you buy from the factory directly then buying it somewhere else. In Jordan I went to see the computers and figured out that the prices are so much more expensive here then in other countries. So here wouldn’t be he best place to buy a computer or laptop because of the price. The price really effects the people’s dissensions to purchase technological tools. Actually for some it doesn’t for example a flash drive you can find really cheap around here, but a laptop that is a lot of money and yes I even had second thoughts on buying a laptop. I think that an mp3 player is the least needed because you could have an mp3 player on your phone or your laptop. So I think if you not the music person an mp3 player such as an ipod is not important. To go to collage a laptop is essential, I have a couple of cousins that went to collage and they said you need a portable computer to succeed in collage it’s just a must need. Since we are still young I think the only required thing we should have is a flash drive later on we will need to get more technology tools.

After reading the article, I really wouldn’t say that the students in the article are “typical” students. I believe they are a bit on the spoilt side and really are buying many things they want, but do not need. The average student at our school definitely has at least one computer or laptop along with a printer at home, and every student in middle and high school definitely has a flash drive. But when the statistics come to cell-phones, I’d say nearly 90% of the students above sixth grade have cell-phones. When we talk about local prices for gadgets, I’d say gadgets here, after some monetary conversions, have roughly the same prices that are mentioned in the article. However I also believe, that prices would affect a parents' decision to buy his/her child the technology. The reason is that if a laptop alone is at least $500, imagine what the price would be for a laptop, printer, flash drive, iPod with a sound system, and a cell-phone would be. I would say it’s at least $2000.

Among the things described, I believe the only really useful thing for an average student to have is a pc/laptop and aprinter at home, along with a flash drive to bring to school. Among the things that are not essential for middle and high school students are: 8 gigabyte flash drives (what are you going to do with all the space), a sound system for your iPod (you already get headphones with iPods), and more than one cell phone. And when you talk about Elementary school, what is a fifth or fourth grader going to do with an iPod or cell-phone other than lose it? When I reach college, I’ll probably need a laptop, printer, flash drive, and maybe my iPod. What I believe that students in our school should have now are, a computer to work on, a printer to print from, and a flash drive to carry documents on.

After seeing what these students have, I see why some people call our generation the technology natives.

WOW! I guess technology is taking over a lot faster and a lot better than I thought. I thought people still use technology very little, but I guess I was very wrong.

My opinion about technology being used a lot is that its actually not bad because that way if all you had to carry to school and around school was a laptop your bag would a lot lighter. Then you won’t get tired going up the stairs. And then when you grow up you won’t have any back problems. You would also have no loose leaf papers getting lost or ripping out. But on your laptop they stay on your laptop .And you probably won’t lose your laptop since it’s very expensive that makes you very cautious about it.

Another theory that I have about studying with laptops and not books in school is that it’s a lot more organized. You would always have your stuff with you, since the only thing you bring to school is your laptop it would be like coming to school without your bag pack, or even without a pen or a pencil. You would also know where you put your things, and if you forgot where you put it all you would have to do is search for it. So having a laptop is a lot better than books because you would be more organized, always prepared, etc...

Even though there are a lot of good things about laptops instead of books, there are also quite some amount of bad things. For example playing games during a very important lesson, or chatting with your friends, or going on face book, etc…

So there are good things to using technology instead of books, but there are also a lot of bad things.

In my opinion I think that the students in this article are definitely what typical teenage students are today. Students in this generation always have some kind of technological device with them. In our school, I would probably guess that 99% of grades 9 through 12 have cell phones if not 100%, but other things like iPods, laptops, and USB's probably are around the 75% range. In middle school I think that about 65% have technological devices, and just a few have them in elementary. (Even though that is changing as times goes by. Now I see little first graders with cell phones that I don’t even know how to use!!)
I think that local prices are about the same everywhere, even though there are some places that sell them for a very high price. Personally, I believe that some families can’t afford electronically devices today, but I’m sure that they will in a couple of years when all the prices go down! But I do think that if a family can’t afford buying expensive technological devices, they can still buy cheap ones, so they can still connect with the rest of the world. I think that every student should have a computer or a laptop, a cell phone, and a USB for school work. But I don’t think anyone is going to need an 8 gigabyte flash drive, I mean I wouldn’t know what to do with a 2 gigabite flash drive!
For college, I think that everyone would need a cell phone, laptop, printer, and most importantly a USB. This is because a USB will always come in handy when you forget your assignments or couldn’t print something! In this school I think that the only thing that we are required to bring is a USB, and have internet access. Other than that though, lots of people have things like iPods, cell phones, and personal laptops.
Therefore I believe that technological devises are useful for entertaining and for school work as well, since it is a big part of kid’s lives in this generation.

What i think about this article is that, kids are having technology to school 24/7, weather it is a school day or not. I for one, have experience, because i am a teen my self. In classes i was enrolled in i would get my own laptop, not just for fun, because i need my own technology.

About the fact that technology is getting cheaper by the minute. Last year i bought a 1GB flash memory for 49.99JD, a year latter which is today, i got a 1GB for 9.95JD and a 2GB for 19.95. That makes me believe that about all i read is going true. I ask my friends waht kind of music do you have, the always replay with a yes answer, because all of them have it in their life's, weather it is a built in waht a cell phone (Walkman, iPhone), or if it is a different iPod, or MP3 player.

I do believe that these students are typical average students. The average student in our school would have an I-pod, a computer or laptop in their household, a cell phone, and a television. In Jordan the prices are very high, and the taxes are high. Compared to America etc, are taxes are about 10 percent higher. Not only are the taxes high, the price of the electronic might cost about 100 JDS more than it does in other places. I think that, people who can afford to go to our school, can afford 500 JDS to buy a computer, or 200 JDS to buy a I-pod or, 150 JDS to buy a cell phone, it wouldn’t cost their family a drastic drop of money. From the things described in the article I have to say a Laptop would be the most important thing for me, I carry it when I travel. In Canada we had a fire in the building and the first thing I took was my laptop, it is my most prized possession. I think for college I have everything I need, a cell phone, a Laptop, a I-pod, Everything I need. For school a student should have at least a computer at home for school work.

Reading through this interesting article, I realize how modern day teenagers rely on technology to complete daily tasks. In this article, it states that an average modern day student in school, owns a cell phone and a MP3. Moreover, it states that nine out of ten people between the ages of twelve to seventeen own a laptop. Most students complete their homework on flash drives and have stopped using the traditional way of carrying papers and adopted the usage of flash drives to save documents. Furthermore, teachers and schools have approved of the usage of modern day technology. Most schools prohibit the usage of cell phones and MP3s in school. Some schools allow laptops to be used for note taking, allow flash drives to be used to complete homework, and allow graphing calculators to be used during mathematic exams.

Today, the typical high school student owns a cell phone, a flash drive, an MP3, and a laptop. We have become dependent on these types of technologies to complete every day tasks, such as completing homework, communicating with friends, listening to music, and storing important data. I would expect that most students attending high school, at the American Community School, at least, have access to computers, cell phones, and MP3s. During the past years, laptop and flash drive prices have dropped drastically, due to the cheap components being manufactured in China. The flash drive that cost forty dinars in 2000 is now costing less than twenty dinars. Laptop prices have also dropped drastically. I recall that my father bought my laptop at almost two thousand dollars, three years ago. Presently, the new model, of the same laptop, is almost one thousand dollars less. In this country, the average income of family is almost one thousand dollars per month. With this kind of income and the increased prices of the daily necessities, buying these kinds of technologies could be a burden to the average family. I strongly believe that out of all these technologies laptops or desktops is most useful and needed for students. On average, every school in Jordan provides student access to computers. In my opinion, the MP3s or any other device that carries music should be the least important for an average student. I am blessed that my family were able to purchase all these technologies in several occasions, where I showed excellence in my academic standing. I am sure that I will take these with me when I attend college. Finally, I don’t think schools should burden families to purchase these gadgets. On the other hand, I strongly believe that schools should, at least, provide access to the use of computers, for academic purposes.

The students in that article, I think, are typical teenage and college students.
In our school, the students are somewhat similar. I can guess more than half the people in this school have a cell phone and maybe at least depend on a USB. In the 21rst century it is almost impossible to find someone who does not depend on technological devices. You see a lot of people at lunch break updating things on a USB flash drive in the computer room or working on their laptops, it makes your life so much easier.
College students should probably all have at least a computer to do their work on. For me, what I would really need is probably a laptop, USB flash drive, printer, and a cell phone. This is what I believe that students in our school should have now, excluding the cell phone (its not really needed but i depend on it.) A lot probably have an ipod or an Mp3player because it's easier to study with music sometimes, but it's not needed either.
Local prices compared with other countries in considering the cost of devices is not very different except in some places computers or gadgets might have a higher cost. Since devices are not so cheap to some families, parents might think twice before buying a gadget to understand why their children might use them for.

Well, I think theyre pretty typical. The average student at our school has a flash drive an iPod or something like an iPod, and since in Jordan the prices of computers, cds, hardware, and flash drives are not that overpriced and its easy to get a hold of. And because the price of newer, better technology is getting cheaper every year, the standards are increasing.

Well I think the most useful would be either a flash drive, or just a laptop because if you have a laptop, you really dont NEED a flash drive. However flash drives are so cheap these days you dont have an excuse not to own one. I think the one thing a student doesnt need would be and iPod but, everyone knows that everyone wants one.

When I go to a college, Ill defiantly need and want a laptop and flash drive. Also I would need a video camera to help me with lectures, and an iPod to save me from college boredom.

I think this article reflects all that is happening now in the world and I totally agree with it. Technology is a big part of our lives and I can surely say that almost everyone uses the technology that is available now. In my opinion those students are typical students. In all the different communities that we live in, mostly everyone uses the technology. Let us take our school for example; I can surely say that at least 90% of our High School students have cell phones, or all the students have a computer in the house whether it's a laptop or a regular computer! The prices are kind of different, it doesn’t vary a lot but there is a small difference between the local prices and prices in other countries. For example, here in Jordan the prices are more expensive than if you are buying from the U.S.
The prices do affect but they affect the parents not the teenagers that are buying them. I mean the teenager won't care if the price for the gadget he or she is buying is a bit expensive, they just want to buy it! But in some cases of course the price matter, I mean if the family has financial problems then they would have trouble buying all those technology devices.
There are some things described in the article that is a must have for every student, for example the computer. These days a lot of the work that is needed for our school, like to complete some home works or work on a project or even study some topics for a test is all on the computer. So if a student doesn’t have a computer he or she will be in trouble because they won't be able to complete the assignments that are given to them. There are devices that are of course not needed like an iPod, which only gives you entertainment, and it isn't a necessary need. I think I'll need to purchase a laptop, I mean now I have my own computer but in college I would need a laptop that can go anywhere with me. In my opinion students these days are required to have computers and I agree with that, every student should have at least one computer in their
